Interested in public transport that actually works, even in traffic-heavy suburban cities? My new book lays out the ins and outs of transit planning, with theory and practice grounded in experience on what delivers. Now available in print and eBook: amazon.com.au/dp/B0GRPZ4VHD/

Check out my latest article: Should Auckland demolish Spaghetti Junction? I make a not-entirely-serious case for ripping out Spaghetti Junction in Auckland, replacing it with a motorway tunnel, and redeveloping above it instead linkedin.com/pulse/should-au… via @LinkedIn

Check out my latest article: Does the New Zealand rail network actually serve New Zealanders? I looked into data on how many kiwis might be able to travel by train… if we ran more than a handful of them each week. linkedin.com/pulse/does-new-… via @LinkedIn

TIL that Atlanta, Georgia was founded as a rail terminus and named after a railway!
This is the main train station for a metro with a smaller population than Atlanta’s, btw.

Aren’t we lucky that Europeans never engage in warfare or conflict between different communities and social groupings.
Ok it seems the theory that they completely predated the Māori might not be true (my mistake, it’s not my area of expertise at all), but they were still enslaved and genocide by the Māori who are now being fetishised as perpetual victims- history is more complicated than that.

This is by far a superior network design and I don’t know why they aren’t going with this one?
One avenue for a wayfinding solution is conceptual/graphical, another one is operational, you can organize services differently to make the network more legible for travelers. At some point you may even want to break the loop all together.

I still maintain if you struggle to draw the network on a map, it’s not a very good network design. How are users supposed to understand it? What is the value of your train looping back to the stations you just went through?
We have tested several solutions in Auckland: - 2 separate lines/colors - 2 slightly different hues - 1 color, 2 parallel lines - 1 color, 1 line This is still a work in progress and is likely to evolve over time.

lol yup, the grinches complaining about a city centre rates funding a public Christmas tree are the same crowd that complained the council wasn't funding Santa Parade enough. Turns out they just like to whinge? nzherald.co.nz/nz/auckland-c… auckland.scoop.co.nz/2019/02…

Alright I’ve got a solution that will save three billion dollars, let’s just move the National MPs offices to the carpark at Wellington airport. Won’t need a tunnel and can have a good view of the cars going round and round. thepost.co.nz/nz-news/360479…

A huge mistake people make with trams is seeing them as very expensive buses rather than as inexpensive metros, which is what they are. Smart cities get this.

Cities skylines when you don't know what you're doing and switch on the free money cheat to try and fix traffic.
