Never considered it, but if you asked me if a school paying a coach’s contractual buyout was income to the coach for tax purposes, I would say, “Yes.” It is a new employer paying an obligation owed by the employee. How is that not income?

It is an interesting twist that would be a big change for most schools that treat the buyout of the coach’s old contract as an “ordinary business expense” and don’t include it in the coach’s income as a benefit.

Whenever I give an opinion or comment on here, the responses are kinda wild. Nobody knows anything. Especially about what will happen in the future given the infinite variables at play. So replying “That’s not going to happen” isn’t profound or clever or even interesting.

Even if you are right. A puppy eating out of a bowl with the names of the teams in the Super Bowl is going to pick the winner sometimes. It doesn’t make the dog smart.

If you say a QB drafted in the 1st round is going to suck or certain coaching hire is a mistake, & they don’t pan out, then good for you-that doesn’t make you knowledgeable. Gimme even odds on every FBS HC hired they never make a playoff, I’d win a lot of $$$. It’s not clever.

SMU thinks it can do something no D1 lax program has ever done in year 1: be relevant & compete right away. SMU thinks they have a cheat code for 2028: Ivy & Patriot League players with a 5th year to play & can’t play for their current team. Mitchell is key to that plan.

Mitchell gives SMU the best chance to keep together the mooted major Princeton transfer class (and other Ivies), which was a major part of why this whole thing got off the ground to the degree it did so quickly. He also runs great stuff on offense and is pretty well-liked
