On June 29, 2001, 29-year-old Patti Adkins clocked out of the Honda factory in Marysville, Ohio, just 19 seconds after midnight. She was supposed to be leaving for a romantic getaway to Canada with a man she believed was going to leave his wife for her. She never came home. Patti had been involved with the married coworker for years. She had given him approximately $90,000, draining savings and borrowing against her retirement fund. Shortly before she vanished, she reportedly told him she needed the money repaid. The planned trip was unusual. Patti told friends she would be hiding beneath a cover in the bed of his pickup truck while he drove a coworker home. She was told not to pack clothes because they would buy everything at a remote cabin. She boarded her pets. Her seven-year-old daughter stayed with family. When Patti failed to return on July 8, her sister reported her missing. Her car remained at home. Her bank accounts and personal records showed no activity afterward. Investigators found cat hair from Patti’s own cats on the truck bed cover, along with a small spot of blood. The boyfriend denied having a relationship with her, despite evidence—including gifts and a letter—that contradicted his claims. Police also investigated his account of stopping at a Burger King after work. The 45-minute wait he described was disputed by the restaurant’s manager. Cadaver dogs alerted near a barn where fresh concrete had reportedly been poured. Investigators excavated the area, but found no remains. The boyfriend was never charged. Authorities consider Patti’s disappearance a homicide, and she was legally declared dead in 2006. Her sister Marcia has said she believes Patti was killed—and that the family still hopes someone will come forward with the truth.
