We mourn the passing of Emma Bonino, a former Open Society board member. She was a tireless advocate for human rights. May her fearlessness continue to inspire those fighting for open societies everywhere. osf.to/4xQ5EIV

States, countries, and cities across the U.S. secured $58 billion via a settlement from companies that fueled the overdose crisis. Yet many jurisdictions are shutting out community members from deciding how this money should be spent to combat the overdose crisis—including on expanding treatment, housing, and harm reduction, writes our @OSFKasia. commondreams.org/opinion/opi…

This was a fascinating conversation with @NowrojeeOSF. She has called for the Taliban to face international courts over their treatment of women in Afghanistan. Having worked with women giving evidence before international tribunals, she explained that many aren’t seeking vengeance. They want justice. And, echoing the message of Gisèle Pelicot, she argued that shame must change sides.

Since taking over Afghanistan five years ago, the Taliban has imposed a brutal and misogynistic regime. As I wrote in the @FinancialTimes today, international courts are their only avenue for justice. But at the same time, international justice is under attack.

Political financing reform “is not just about regulation. It’s about building systems that make politics more accountable, more inclusive, and—mostly—more trusted by citizens,” says Open Society President @nowrojeeOSF to @DailyNation. She explains that clear rules, transparency, and accountability are key to ensuring public institutions serve all citizens and not narrow financial interest and that public service should attract those with good talent, ideas, integrity, and commitment.

Momentum is building for political finance reform across Africa. In her latest article for @The_EastAfrican, @OpenSociety's Nancy Muigei (@kenyangriot) argues that regional and international efforts have created a real opportunity to move from commitments to implementation.
