Nigeria's charge for unauthorised flaring is $3.50/mscf. A new preprint finds phase one of a flare-to-compute project is profitable at any bitcoin price only if at least $1.35/mscf of it reaches the project. Operators, NGFCP award holders: do your gas deals pass any of it on?

Introducing Bitwater: the water heater element that mines Bitcoin. It screws into the electric tank you already have. Physically decentralized mining that runs no matter what 🧵 Heat water. Mine Bitcoin. Same tank.

“Bitcoin is doomed because miners won’t be profitable when all the coins are mined” “Bitcoin needs inflation of new coins for miners to remain profitable in the long term” Here is @LynAldenContact’s response

A typical nuclear power plant produces approximately 2-3 cubic metres of high-level radioactive waste per year of operation, meaning the entire lifetime output of a plant running for 40 years would fill a space roughly the size of a large living room. All the high-level nuclear waste ever produced by US commercial reactors in over 50 years of operation would fit under one American football field stacked less than 10 yards deep.

Small pellet. Huge energy. 🤯 One uranium fuel pellet packs more power than you might guess.

data center power is not one thing - important to delineate the multiple bottlenecks causing power delays 1. getting power to the site is about interconnect (grid) or behind the meter (renewables, nuclear, gas plant) 2. power outside the data hall is about transformers (voltage step down), generators or batteries for redundancy, ATS (auto transfer switch) to toggle between the two sources, and switchgears which transfer medium voltage power to a second transformer in the data hall which steps down voltage again 3. power inside the data hall is the UPS (uninterruptible power supply which can handle brief power outages until generator comes online), PDUs (power distribution units) which are basically power strips on steroids within the rack, and the PSU (power supply unit) which converts and feeds the right voltage to the rack, and lastly the VRM (voltage regulation monitor) which fine tunes and stabilizes the power to the CPUs and GPUs each of these steps in the data center power flow has immense structural shortages and needs re-design to accommodate denser racks and higher power compute. so "power" is really about a number of things with very different profiles, value chains, etc. if you read @CrucibleCap's Data Center Report on Power Systems, Cooling, and the Switch to 800V DC in Feb 2026, you'd be miles ahead of the curve 😉 we've invested in critical infrastructure in each of these layers of the data center power stack, from materials to power electronics to orchestration and optimization tools to financial engineering tools to manage volatility and risk

The oldest producer of clean renewable electricity in the United States, Mechanicville Hydroelectric was saved by bitcoin mining. The Mechanicville hydroelectric plant in New York dates to 1897. It was built on the Hudson River to supply electricity to General Electric’s operations in Schenectady. The company has since long abandoned the facility. In 2021, the hydroelectric dam could not make a profit and was going to be decommissioned. Bitcoin mining fixed that when the CEO decided to use some of the electricity to run Bitcoin miners. CEO Jim Besha said selling power to the grid brought in three cents per kilowatt-hour. Bitcoin mining brought in approximately three times as much. He was buying used mining equipment and converting the bitcoin into cash rather than keeping it as an investment. This saved the facility.

Fission and fusion are two physical processes that produce massive amounts of energy from atoms. They yield millions of times more energy than other power sources through nuclear reactions but differ in 5 key ways.

On a roll here: Presenting Nuclear Reactors for Space (1961) Liquid metal coolant, beryllium reflectors, rotating control drums, mercury vapor turbogenerators... all in 1961 This has rare footage showing lots of hardware and even reactor shipments around California. The IAEA's Lise Meitner Library digitized this one and I got permission from them and DOE to get it and post it. (I recently got a big batch through this method so expect more). Enjoy! Catalog entry: "The SNAP program Systems for Nuclear Auxiliary Power is an AEC program to develop long-lived auxiliary power from nuclear energy for use in satellites and space vehicles. Compact atomic reactors being developed by Atomics International for use in SNAP systems are shown in this semitechnical film. Safety characteristics of the SNAP reactor during fabrication, testing, transport, installation, launching, and use in space are described. Detailed sequences filmed at Atomics International on fabrication and testing show the simplicity and compactness of the reactors. Safety features are described in scenes that illustrate shipping, launch-site activities, and launch of the reactor into space. The burnup and dispersal of the reactor during reentry into the atmosphere are shown in a detailed animation sequence. Many beneficial uses of SNAP in the U. S. national space program are illustrated."
