Kudos to New MEXICO for setting a national example of what state-level Big Tech accountability can look like.
A counter-example by @NewMexicoDOJ - you can take Meta to court and win.
Breaking News: Meta must pay $25 billion, one of the largest penalties levied against the tech giant, for deceiving users about data privacy. nyti.ms/4yvv5yZ

My statement on the Google Ad-tech ruling (Sumit Sharma, Executive Director for @NxtGenComp)
“Though we have not yet seen the final opinion, in our view the government had a strong case to ask for a break-up. News reports indicated that in 2022, Google offered to split parts of its business that auction and place ads on websites and apps into a separate company under the Alphabet umbrella to head off this lawsuit: an acknowledgment of the conflicts of interest at the heart of this case.
We are disappointed that the court has ordered only behavioral remedies with no separation to address these conflicts of interest.
Given the complicated and often obscured ways ad-tech markets are structured and operate, it will be difficult for any outside party to implement and monitor behavioral remedies. We are skeptical that behavioral remedies will be sufficient to allow competitors to challenge Google’s dominant position in ad tech and provide meaningful relief to publishers, advertisers, or consumers who ultimately end up paying for inflated advertising charges via higher prices.”

Amazon's stranglehold on e-commerce, delivery, and advertising gives the company power to mistreat its workers, raise prices for customers, and charge sellers outrageous fees.
This antitrust case is a real shot at breaking up the company and changing the way it does business!
Hundreds of companies and 34 business associations have signed our letter urging 17 states & the @FTC to TAKE AMAZON TO TRIAL for monopoly harms. Small businesses are tired of weak settlements w/ no lasting structural change. Markets can't fix this. smallbusinessrising.net/lett…

"Nothing about Adam Candeub’s record suggests he’ll do anything at the Antitrust Division except continue to carry water for big corporations from a desk at Justice."

"Google's durable dominance wasn't inevitable; it was purchased. If the court allows those payments to continue, the remedy will leave the monopoly largely intact instead of restoring genuine competition."

While Donald Trump profits off the presidency, Americans are left without protection against corporate corruption.

So Adam Candeub is going to run the Antitrust Division. Though in truth Trump runs it.

My take on the AI bubble and how antitrust enforcement can help. My favorite example of the bubble is ‘All Birds’ a maker of wool sneakers that promised to become a GPU-as-a-Service provider and its stock surged 350% in a week! @techpolicypress ⬇️

Great to speak with Carleigh Beriont - Dem candidate for Congress in NH 1.
Not only she is up for taking on BigTech and has smart policies to address affordability - she is only campaigning in person and is off social media !

One family is about to control CBS, CNN, HBO, and TikTok. They’ll buy WBD with $24 billion in money from the Saudis, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. To win over Trump, they canceled Colbert, blocked a CECOT investigation, and blocked Talarico. Much more will follow. Block this rotten deal.

My take on the Apple-Google Gemini deal in @NxtGenComp newsletter.
➡️ Apple said in search case Google payments were to compete on AI
➡️ False
➡️ Undermines remedies ordered in Google search & another reason to appeal
➡️ Also data point in DOJ suit against Apple

Courts alone cannot check the corrupting influence of billionaires or challenge the market & political power of the largest corporations.
We need legislators like @reed_showalter who can take up this fight. It was great to speak with him & hear why he is running for Congress.

Seems Meta's enshittification (@doctorow) of products-moving away from connected (friend/family) posts to unconnected (AI sludge) saved it from antitrust enforcement!
Meanwhile it can keep harming our kids and delivering 5 billion scam ads a day to its users! @ConsumerReports ⬇️
