In one of interviews by @TimWillits, you can find out, that @Quake Champions were prototyped in Quake Live, but after one crucial decision of using Saber tech instead of @DOOM (2016 - id Tech 6) lead to painstaking work of Adam Pyle, trying to fix the game while reverse engineering it's parts, as players pretty quickly found out that Saber tech is not suitable to demands of Arena FPS with it's "default" lag on control inputs, ethernal loading times and disability to continue in match once server is created. With BloodRun MOD for Quake 3, you can see how Champions would work on good old tech. I still don't like old boxy aesthetic of arenas, but whole Champions theme is really really well executed, and you get proper response you would expect from controls entered by players.
