Atlantic salmon at the store is farmed. Wild Atlantic salmon are endangered in the US and fishing for them is closed, and around the world wild ones are almost never sold, so if the label says Atlantic it came out of a net pen.
Almost all of it comes from farms in Chile, Norway, Canada and Scotland. The fish are raised in pens in the ocean and fed pellets. Farmed Atlantic salmon has more fat than wild salmon, so it's softer and milder, and it's in the case all year.
Wild salmon at the store is a Pacific species, and the label names it as king, sockeye, coho, pink or keta. Most of it is caught in Alaska during a summer season, so a lot of it is sold frozen.
