In March 1997, police walked into a mansion near San Diego and found 39 bodies on bunk beds. All of them wore the same black clothes and the same brand-new Nike sneakers, with a purple cloth over their faces. They had killed themselves to catch a spaceship they believed was hiding behind a comet.
In the video below, you see them a few days earlier. One by one they sit in front of a camera and say goodbye. They smile. Several of them call it the happiest day of their lives.
They called themselves Heaven's Gate. Their leader, Marshall Applewhite, a former music teacher, told them the Hale-Bopp comet was bringing a spaceship to take them home. All they had to do was leave their bodies behind.
They lived together, shared the same haircut and the same clothes, answered to new names, and paid the bills by building websites.
They died in shifts over three days. Each one had a five-dollar bill and some quarters in their pocket.
On the tapes, a former army paratrooper thanks Applewhite for taking him under his wing. A mother of three says her thoughts in these last hours are "only of joy and wonder."
"I am doing this of my own free will."
Experts who studied the tapes say almost every one of them repeats Applewhite's words nearly word for word. And on the other side of the camera, Applewhite was sitting there, listening.
One investigator called it 38 murders and one suicide.
Was this 39 people choosing to leave, or one man making sure none of them could change their mind?

At 26 years....Pat Utomi was already a special assistant to the Shagari govt on economic matters....
They oversaw one of Nigeria worst economic slump in history....
Nigeria was just transiting from the oil boom era under Gowon and Obasanjo that saw the duo wasted Nigeria opportunity to develop on stomach infrastructure....
They invested billions of Naira on frivolities....from the udoji wage bonanza, to monumental cement importation deadlock.., to big brother Africa bonanza to Festac.... Obasanjo and Gowon ate Nigeria future with some public servants....
Like Tinubu.... Shagari inherited a dying economy.....
Instead of embarking on economic reforms like Tinubu.... Shagari continued the business as usual route...
Nigeria was committing billions of dollars to defend the Naira..... Shagari... probably listening to the young Utomi.... choose not to float the Naira... The numerous subsidies introduced by Gowon were retain.... Stomach infrastructures reign supreme...
Borrowing grew by almost 200%.... as Nigeria debt climbed from about N7 billion to over N30 billion.....
The so call "good life " led to massive importation.... exportation fell as the artificial strong Naira " killed export...
Soon the $10 billion reserve Shagari met..disappeared..
Nigeria had no dollar to import basic commodities..... local industries had no dollar to buy machine parts and raw materials...
The shelves were now empty.... people could no longer find essential products to buy even when they had money.... these was not scarcity of fuel.... but food, drugs and others...
Inflation flew from 10% in 1980 to over 35% in 1984....
Shagari was forced to ban importation of some specific goods to conserve dollars...
nigeria was just roughly a nation of about 60 million people....
Tinubu is shoving through same crisis without the disastrous approach of Shagari for a population over 4 times of what Shagari managed...
Naira was artificially stronger than the dollar in the Shagari economic disaster...
So the idea that a Naira with value below N500 to a dollar means comfortable life is lame...
Pat Utomi was part of the Shagari disaster... it was the most hated IBB SAP which devalued the Naira.... that resurrected Nigeria economy from death
The internet is awash with numerous videos of Pat Utomi eulogizing Tinubu in the past....probably he may have fell out with Tinubu over his attempt to reinvent the Shagari economic harakiri under Tinubu...
Unfortunately he is positioning himself as Obi economic minister in a bid to punish this generation as he did with the past....
For those who thinks Utomi is actually brilliant..... They are the reason why the Urhobos say...

I’ve said it several times that I supported Peter Obi in 2022/23 because of his economic policies.
Fortunately or unfortunately, Tinubu got into power and started implementing those policies I had looked forward to Obi implementing.
I publicly backed those policies, cause I believe they were in the best interest of the country.
On the other hand, the same Peter Obi I once supported started speaking against these policies he once campaigned with.
I publicly called out that deceitful behaviour.

Operatives of the National Dr¥g Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested two Europe-based Nigerian businessmen who allegedly attempted to smuggle cocaine into Paris, France, after ingesting 200 wraps of the dr¥g.
The suspects, Aliocus Godian Odife and Sam Blackborn, were arrested on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, during the outward clearance of Air France flight AF 832 from Abuja to Paris.
NDLEA said the duo excreted 200 wraps of cocaine weighing 3.460 kilogrammes.
