Oman’s mountains hold a natural answer to carbon capture The Hajar Mountains are home to a natural process that scientists around the world are studying closely: rocks that absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into solid stone. The rocks, known as peridotite, are part of the Samayil Ophiolite. This section of the Earth’s mantle formed beneath an ancient ocean floor about 96 million years ago and was later thrust onto land, shaping the mountains of the Sultanate of Oman. It is one of the largest and best-exposed formations of its kind in the world. When carbon-rich water seeps into the rock, a reaction known as mineralisation begins. Olivine, the main mineral in peridotite, reacts with carbon dioxide to form solid carbonate, which keeps the carbon stored for millions of years. The white veins running through Oman’s mountains are the visible result of this reaction. The process is increasingly studied as a natural way to capture carbon, which puts Oman’s geology at the centre of the global conversation on climate solutions.
