If you watch a lot of Thai GL, you'll notice almost every series has the "getting parents' approval" storyline. For Vietnamese viewers like me, it makes total sense, because Thai and Vietnamese culture share the same deep respect for parents.
In Vietnam, we say "parents are the Buddha in your home." Thai people have a similar saying: "parents are the arahants in your home." Both see parents as your first teachers, and what they've done for you is something you can never fully repay. Vietnamese homes also have altars for ancestors, and every year we hold Vu Lan to honor our parents. So in our cultures, going against your parents to be with someone isn't just a personal choice. It's seen as failing your family.
That's why stories in both countries often follow one idea: you don't turn your back on your parents for love, and you don't give up the person you love just because your parents say no. You find a way to keep both.
Bulan and Lieutenant Pheem's story shows this most clearly:
1. Protecting filial duty, not pushing her love into bad karma
As a Mae Khru, Bulan lives by spiritual precepts and believes in karma more than anyone. Buddhism teaches that parents gave us life and raised us, and children must be grateful and repay them. Hurting your parents creates bad karma. However harsh and controlling Pheem's mom is, she's still her mother. Bulan truly loves Pheem, so she doesn't want Pheem to be called an ungrateful child, or carry the karma of turning her back on her own mother because of her.
2. Love without magic
Bulan has real magic. If she held on to Pheem while the family fiercely opposed them, people would instantly say Pheem was under a love spell, and that rumor would follow them forever. Only by proving this love comes from the heart, with no magic at all, can they receive the most precious blessing: their family's.
3. One step back, a hundred steps forward
Bulan leaving isn't giving up or abandoning Pheem. It's a deliberate step back: it lets Pheem keep her duty to her mother and clears every suspicion of magic. She steps back now so that one day they can come back together the right way, with everyone's acceptance.
In our Asian culture, the path Bulan chose is the most complete way to love: loving someone means loving their family and respecting their duty as a child too. Bulan doesn't choose between love and filial duty. She chooses a path where Pheem doesn't have to lose either. And maybe that patience is Mae Khru Bulan's strongest magic of all: not a spell, but compassion and a love big enough to wait.

this works for The Fire too.
i was so pissed with phanee and akanee. at the same time, i can't help but to understand why Fai and kaphrao choose what they did.
it's deeply rooted from cultural background and i can personally relate too 😖
