Just like ENS, every OpenAvatar comes with a full text record database to store custom data. After minting, visit your Avatar at openavatar.tech/wallet to customize your avatar pfp background by setting a text record with the background color.

Since your OpenAvatar is stored 100% onchain, your pfp will update immediately. Click "refresh metadata" in other marketplaces to load the change.

After clicking "Edit Profile Picture", you will also have the option of cropping your pfp to only show your Avatar's headshot, if you so choose. The interface looks like this. Select the option, set a background color, then store the records onchain.

Every time I index into the array, I have to write a comment block explaining exactly what each level is again to remind me. But it works and it's 200x more gas-efficient than the naïve implementation.
