1700 plus dead bodies in the prisons since 2019 isn't hype. Alabama prisons have the highest death rate in the nation. The status quo denial of this truth is a damn shame & an insult to the hundreds of families victimized by this system every day through extortion, drug addiction and threats of harm and real harm to their families.

Public records champions @EvanMealins & @KellyPuenteTN continue to pry details from the state around failed executions.
Tennessee has spent $1.175M on lethal injection drugs in recent years while failing to carry out two of its three recent executions.

Attorney thanks Alabama governor for commuting Toforest Johnson’s death sentence.
“We are grateful to Governor Ivey for diligently reviewing Toforest’s case and taking action to spare an innocent man from execution,” said Ty Alper, one of Johnson’s attorneys, “This significant milestone was made possible by Alabamians from all sectors of society united in their belief that Toforest does not belong on death row. That list now includes Governor Ivey.”
“Toforest Johnson is innocent,” his attorney said. “Now it is up to the courts to overturn his conviction and grant him a new trial. We will keep fighting until he is home with his family.”

Toforest Johnson wakes up today knowing the state of Alabama will not execute him. I am thinking of him, his love & commitment to his family, his five children and 19 grandchildren, his dear mother, Donna. And how this family has never wavered, never stopped believing and hoping and praying. And neither has he.

I remember #WillieSmith executed by the state of Alabama on Oct 21, 2021. He was sentenced to death despite a non-unanimous sentencing recommendation and executed despite having intellectual disabilities (IQ of 64). Read: eji.org/news/willie-smith-al…

TOFOREST JOHNSON'S DEATH SENTENCE HAS BEEN COMMUTED! Gov. Kay Ivey grants clemency in long-running wrongful conviction. I am sobbing with gratitude and relief.
More work to do, but this is a victory for truth and justice. Thank you, God!!!!!!!!!!

the notion that we still think that the best way for a family to find peace is to gleefully watch a person killed by the state in front of them……it’s like humanity hasn’t progressed beyond medieval times. utterly barbaric shit
