A one-month-old girl in The Gambia has died after being subjected to FGM. This is not culture or tradition — it is violence and a grave violation of human rights. FGM kills an estimated 44,320 girls and young women every year — one every 12 minutes. In The Gambia, prevalence remains at 75–76%, with infants increasingly targeted to evade detection. We demand justice for this child, full enforcement of the FGM ban, and global accountability for states failing to protect girls. Silence makes more deaths inevitable. On day 3 of the #26thCSOForum in Lesotho 🇱🇸 @TheGirlGen had the opportunity to speak on the transformative power of language in the work to end FGM. The session opened with a thoughtful safeguarding statement from Brenda Dora of @OrchidProject acknowledging that these conversations can be triggering, and placing wellbeing at the centre. We then shared our renewed, bold position: 👉🏾 FGM is violence. It is abuse. It is a human rights violation rooted in inequality. 2️⃣Highest prevalence: Malay Muslims in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei — with over 90% of the Malay ethnic community practicing FGM Most impacted: Indonesia — 70 million women & girls affected (UNICEF). 3️⃣ Legislation gaps: Indonesia is the only Asian country with laws regulating FGM/C: Govt Regulation No. 28/2024 bans FGC for girls under 5 Ministry of Health Regulation (2025) aims to eliminate harmful practices for all ages Other Asian countries have no explicit laws against FGM/C. 4️⃣ Lack of data: Only Maldives & Indonesia include FGM/C in population surveys.
