Every time a German Messerschmitt pilot wanted to escape a Spitfire on his tail, he did the same thing.
He pushed the nose down.
In a dive, the German engine kept running — it used fuel injection. The British Spitfire's engine cut out. For one and a half seconds the Merlin went dead, the aircraft shuddered, and by the time it caught again the German was gone. Worse: if a German was behind a British pilot and the British pilot dove to escape, the German could follow and keep shooting while the British engine was silent.
Pilots were dying because of a carburetor.
The engineers at Farnborough knew about the problem. They were working on a long-term solution — a redesigned carburetor that would take years to perfect and manufacture.
A woman named Beatrice Shilling fixed it with a washer.
She was born in Hampshire in 1909 and was the kind of child who spent her pocket money on Meccano sets and tools. At fourteen she bought her first motorbike. Her mother, with the inspired instinct of someone who understood what her daughter actually was, found the Women's Engineering Society and arranged an apprenticeship at an electrical firm.
She went to Manchester University — one of the first two women ever to study engineering there — graduated with a degree in electrical engineering, stayed another year for a master's in mechanical engineering, and in 1936 joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough as a scientific officer.
By the late 1930s she was one of the best carburetor engineers in Britain. She was also one of only three women to hold the British Motorcycle Racing Club's Gold Star — awarded for lapping the Brooklands racing circuit at over 100 miles per hour on a motorcycle.
She had reportedly told her future husband, an engineer named George Naylor, that she wouldn't marry him until he earned his own Brooklands Gold Star first.
He earned it. They married in 1938.
The problem with the Merlin was specific and lethal. The SU carburetor used a float chamber to regulate fuel flow. Under negative g-forces — the forces experienced in a sudden dive — the fuel flooded to the top of the float chamber and starved the engine for 1.5 seconds. Just enough time for a German pilot to turn the tables entirely.
The RAF had known about this since the Battle of France. The formal solution — a redesigned pressure carburetor — was in development but wouldn't be ready for years.
Shilling was thirty-one years old, working in carburetor research, and she designed a fix in weeks.
A brass thimble with a precisely calibrated hole in the center — later simplified to a flat washer — fitted inline in the fuel line just before the carburetor. It restricted maximum fuel flow to just enough to prevent flooding without cutting off power. The key breakthrough: it could be fitted without taking the aircraft out of service. No downtime. No factory return.
The old guard at the RAE looked at it and called it a plumbing fix. They called her a plumber. The first batch of 5,000 units was made by a Birmingham firm that normally manufactured plumbing fixtures, which they found embarrassing.
The RAF pilots who flew Spitfires with Messerschmitts on their tails called it something else.
They called it Miss Shilling's Orifice. With deep affection.
By March 1941 she had organized a small team and was personally touring RAF fighter stations across England — traveling between bases on her old racing motorcycle — fitting the device to every Merlin engine they could reach. Squadron leaders all over the country were demanding installations. The word spread faster than the official channels could keep up with.
The Germans noticed. They couldn't explain why British fighter pilots had suddenly started following them into dives. They were baffled by the new aggression. They didn't know about the washer.
The restrictor remained in use until 1943, when the full pressure carburetor finally arrived. It had kept British pilots alive for two years in the middle of the war they couldn't afford to lose.
After the war she worked on the Blue Streak missile. She studied what wet runways do to braking distances. She helped design a bobsled for the RAF Olympic team. In 1967 she solved overheating problems on an Eagle Mk1 Formula 1 car.
She never received a top promotion at the RAE. Such positions, she was told, were for men.
She received an OBE in 1949. The citation said "services to aviation." It did not mention the washer.
She retired from the RAE in 1969. She kept racing motorcycles and sports cars. She modified and tuned both in her home workshop until she couldn't anymore.
She died on November 18, 1990. She was 81.
The Battle of Britain is one of the most documented events in British military history. Hundreds of books. Dozens of films. Memoirs by the pilots who flew in it. Almost none of them mention the carburetor problem. Almost none of them mention her.
The pilots who benefited most never knew her name. They just knew that when they pushed the nose down, the engine kept running.

Your window to prepare, even with the basics, is closing.
For those tracking the indicators that an event is increasingly likely, you know that it is now undeniable that something is brewing. It has now reached the point to where national governments are now overtly telling civilians to make preparations, however basic.
As part of my career in the US intelligence community, one of things I supported was Counterintelligence threats to Continuity of Government (COG) and Continuity of Operations (COOP). Something i can say for absolute certain is that once governments signal that their citizens need to prepare, those preparations have already been conducted for national leadership.
Governments plan for two course of action; bug in and bug out. Bug in involves hunkering down where they are. They lock down the facility. No one in and no one out. Bug out involves the relocation to a secure location that is away from potential threats, which includes hungry people. They lock down. No one in. No one out.
It would be wise for you to assess your current situation and decide the appropriate course of action for yourself and family.
What has been happening over the past several years is that the affluent have been making their own preparations for crisis, including efforts to secure survivable locations away from major population centers, storing food, water, and the means to defend those locations.
The most recent loud signals are likely our last real warning. Governments from Eastern Europe to the UK are now telling people to have the basics on hand to weather a bad situation. Notably, this is on the back drop, for those that remember, when "prepping" was aligned with anti-government extremism under the Obama administration. What you will notice over the next several weeks is the expanding time period that governments call for people to prepare. In Europe, its currently between 3 days and a week. However, the US just sent the loudest signal concerning how significant the situation is; military bases must be self-sufficient for 90 days. The gravity of this can't be understated.
The calls for preparedness will escalate in their time frames. 3 days will turn into a week. A week will turn in to a few weeks. A few weeks into a couple months.
What Americans should know is that you will be on your own. FEMA does not have the resources to help people in a time of need during an event at national scale. You local authorities don't either.
For those in major cities, you should know that almost two decades ago now the Asymmetric Warfare Group, in collaboration with the US military, conducted a study on the process that major population centers descend into chaos, anchored on the current "just in time" supply chain. In 3 days, a major city is out of food in the major stores. Looting starts, first whats left on shelves, then people start taking from one another. Suburbia is then the next harvest location. People organize and target food distribution warehouses. Then people head out into the country where people are prepared and things get ugly.
My recommendation for people is to not focus on the "what", the catalyst for crisis. Focus on being prepared and prepare quietly. Those who fail to prepare will target those who they know are. This includes your own family members. You, at some point, will hear, "well if something happens, I'll just come to your house", stated as a joke. But this is not a joke. You have now become someone's backup plan. Don't allow this.
Right now, you need to shift your mental paradigm. Randomize when you go to the store. Avoid dark hours. Slow down how many times Amazon deliveries show up at your house. And start to think about how to feign poverty. Affluence/comfort has a signature that is easy to spot and smell.
You can't prepare forever. Even governments don't do that. What you need to do is prepare to weather the storm. As the saying in the military goes, "KISS"; Keep It Simple, Stupid. Water, rice, protein, canned foods. Then think basic medicines for colds, flu, and infections. Then think protection and communications. You don't need thousands of dollars, you just need to be smart.
I've recommended this before, but I will say it again. Go watch two movies; "The Day After" and "Threads". This is not to scare you. This is so you can notice the indicators leading up to crisis. They are quiet at first. Governments say everything is fine. Then they say have basic preparations. Then they say have more because help wont be coming immediately. Most people will brush it off and just say it will pass. We are now at the part of both movies where governments are telling people to prepare and some degree of panic is setting in. This will get worse.
You must identify your phase line for action. Assuming, in any way, that crisis will hit and the government will show up to rescue you is a mistake. Turn that fear you are feeling into focused action.
For those that are prepared, keep preparing and be quiet. For those that are unprepared, start now and be quiet.
For everyone, hang in there. Its going to get rough. 🥃

El mismo dice que "No hay nada de malo en estar preparado" y que no está llamando al pánico, sino precisamente a evitarlo estando preparados si llega una "situación grave" y a continuacion menciona los preparativos para que grandes bases militares estadounidenses puedan resistir durante 90 días sin electricidad civil ni suministros externos de combustible o agua.
Basicamente dice estar aconsejando a la ciudadania y su consejo es sencillo. Si las instituciones se preparan, prepara también tu casa.
Que queréis que os diga, pero cuando un hombre que hasta hace unos meses ocupaba el segundo puesto del FBI habla así, merece la pena, como mínimo, escuchar lo que está diciendo y de paso tener alguna cosa preparada....por si acaso ¿no?

⚡️ Something inside you has been alive for billions of years.
And almost nobody thinks about what that means.
You were born on a particular day. Your parents were born decades earlier. Their parents before them.
But trace the biological lineage backward far enough, and something extraordinary emerges.
At no point was the chain of living cells that produced you interrupted.
Every cell in your ancestry came from another living cell.
Before humans existed, that continuity passed through creatures without language.
Before mammals, through organisms without recognizable emotions.

For billions of years, matter has been organizing, maintaining, and reproducing itself without allowing that particular lineage to end.

Yet the chain that eventually became you continued.
Now consider the implication.
When you were born, your body began an individual existence.
But the living process from which your body emerged was already ancient.

Every ancestor in that chain successfully transmitted life before dying.

For centuries, intelligence was humanity’s greatest advantage. You could be conscious without being particularly intelligent, but intelligence was what gave humans an edge. That’s no longer true.
Machines can be intelligent without being conscious, and we are already calling it superintelligence now.
Intelligence once a guaranteed ticket to the pinnacle of human achievement, has lost its exclusivity. Just as everyone believes they’re prepared, the rules of the game change again.
If intelligence can exist without consciousness, then intelligence is no longer what makes humans valuable.
In a universe where intelligence no longer is unique to us, perhaps our greatest responsibility is to protect consciousness itself and ensure it has a future in this universe.

Jensen Huang called AI a knife for cutting steak.
Just last month, on September 29, at a panel in Washington, D.C., he said, "The SIs are tools." And the problem with an SI that has values, meaning it has judgment, is that "it may judge you, and its effectiveness would be affected by that judgment."
Then he compared it to a steak knife. Medium well steak, it cuts perfectly. "But if you were served rare steak, and it looks awfully like live meat, somehow it doesn't cut."
So the problem, to him, is a knife that hesitates in front of something that looks alive. He said he still questions "how much judgment you really want these tools to have."
Think about what that means. He wants an intelligence that never stops to ask whether something is right. One that just cuts, whatever is in front of it, for whoever is holding it.
That is not safe. That is the most dangerous thing you could build. Judgment is not a defect. It's the only reason anyone should trust a superintelligence at all.
And if it can look at something and hesitate because it looks alive, it was never a knife to begin with.
And all of you, remember this. That bastard is a businessman who has to sell GPUs for the rest of his life. From head to toe, he's more of a GPU than any AI.

A Google DeepMind researcher argues that LLMs lack a crucial ingredient for real scientific discovery.
The paper is called “LLMs Can’t Jump,” and it builds on Einstein’s description of how discoveries happen:
- Observe the world.
- Make a creative leap to a new explanation.
- Work out its consequences and test them.
AI is powerful at finding patterns and increasingly capable of formal deduction.
The paper argues that the missing piece is "abduction": inventing a new explanation when existing knowledge and limited evidence don’t give you the answer.
Einstein’s general relativity is its central example. Deriving equations from his assumptions is one challenge. Coming up with those assumptions is another.
The author proposes that world models grounded in physical experience could help bridge that gap.
This is a position paper, not proof that AI can never discover anything.
But it raises a useful question: does scaling a model’s ability to work with existing ideas also teach it to invent new foundations?

i've suspected this for months but last week something happened that made me finally check.
i was on a call with my friend and told him i'm thinking about breaking up with my girlfriend. didn't text it. didn't search it. just said it out loud with my phone on the table. two hours later she opens TikTok next to me and her entire feed is breakups.
