America’s AI investment boom is real. Hyperscalers invested $750 billion in R&D and capital spending in 2025, up from $15 billion two decades earlier.
Yet despite this surge, productive investment as a share of US GDP has barely budged. The AI boom has yet to translate into a broader industrial renaissance, raising questions about what it will take to boost US manufacturing and competitiveness.

Vertical Foundation Models
@sdianahu
General-purpose AI is getting incredibly capable, but many industrial problems don’t need a giant model that can do everything.
Specialized foundation models for manufacturing, energy, and biology could match or beat general models with a fraction of the compute, learning new tasks from little or no labeled data.

Recently, with my medical colleagues, we have been planning many studies on #AI and #healthcare.
I would like to write a short article about this, and I will share many references for enthusiasts.
The development of medical AI can be divided into three overlapping phases:
Mapping: Identify clinical problems and explore AI solutions. Many rule-based clinical decision support systems already exist in emergency departments, such as ECG interpretation tools. Machine learning algorithms are now being developed for tasks such as radiology image analysis and sepsis prediction.
Measurement: Validate AI models in real-world clinical settings. While thousands of AI studies exist, very few have been subjected to rigorous clinical trials. This "AI divide" between research and implementation is a major hurdle.
Management: Integrating validated AI tools into clinical workflows. This future stage could see AI managing much of the clinical process, although significant barriers remain.
In particular, machine learning and neural networks are our focus.
Machine learning (#ML) and neural networks (#NN) are changing the face of healthcare by improving diagnostic accuracy, predicting patient outcomes, and optimizing healthcare management. This synthesis explores the diverse applications and benefits of these technologies in healthcare.
Diagnostic accuracy and predictive power:
ML and NN models, including support vector machines (SVMs) and artificial neural networks (ANNs), have demonstrated high accuracy in diagnosing diseases such as cancer, with accuracies ranging from 94% to 97%.
Deep learning (#DL) models outperform traditional ML models in clinical prediction tasks such as mortality prediction and length of stay, especially when using raw clinical time series data.
Handling High-Dimensional and Temporal Data:
DL methods excel at managing high-dimensional healthcare data and capturing temporal patterns, which are crucial for accurate predictions in healthcare.
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are effective in analyzing irregular and unordered physiological data by exploiting the implicit information in biological systems.
Healthcare Management and Decision-Making:
ANNs are increasingly being used to inform healthcare management decisions at multiple levels, from patient-provider interactions to system-wide policy decisions.
ML models can uncover hidden patterns in large datasets, supporting efficient and effective healthcare management.
Applications in Health Informatics:
DL techniques are central to health informatics, contributing to areas such as translational bioinformatics, medical imaging, and public health by generating high-level features and semantic interpretations from multimodal data.
The integration of ML in health informatics is being driven by advances in computing power, data storage, and parallelization.
Challenges and future directions:
Despite promising results, challenges remain, such as handling missing values, dealing with temporal irregularities, and ensuring scalability.
Future research should focus on improving interpretability, incorporating medical ontologies, and developing robust learning strategies.
Final Words
Machine learning and neural networks are transforming healthcare by improving diagnostic accuracy, managing high-dimensional and temporal data, and optimizing healthcare management. While significant progress has been made, continued research is essential to overcome existing challenges and realize the full potential of these technologies in healthcare.
