A rather interesting cultural shift that has happened is how the complexity which defined the 19th and 20th understanding of wants, desires and fears have been displaced to the understanding of its expressions.
This has curiously created a sort of muddled border between irrationality and immorality: when someone acts against (our standard of) reason for in a way that plainly cannot be attributed to ignorance, there will be a suspicion of malice.
