She was especially remembered by younger audiences for voicing Alice the Great, Little Bill’s beloved grandmother in Nickelodeon’s animated series Little Bill. Her warm, gentle, and wise voice helped make Alice one of the most memorable characters in the show. Beyond animation, Dee was widely recognized for her iconic performances as Ruth Younger in A Raisin in the Sun, Mother Sister in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, and Mama Lucas in American Gangster, starring alongside Denzel Washington. Throughout her remarkable career, she received numerous honors, including a Grammy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, the National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honors. She also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in American Gangster. Born October 27, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, Ruby Dee passed away on June 11, 2014, at the age of 91.
