A Monday Reminder ...
Digital licenses are temporary. Physical media is permanent ownership.
Stop letting platforms like PlayStation dictate what remains in your library. Protect the software, maintain the hardware, and control your own access 🧲
Planned on tackling a stack of work today but classic 8-bit Mario and a bowl of leftover Halloween candy demanded my immediate attention!
Cleared Worlds 1–8 on SMB3 and put Bowser in his place -he never stood a chance against the master of magnetism 🧲

The N64 port of Resident Evil 2 shouldn't exist, yet it remains one of the most chilling experiences on the console 👻
On a spooky Halloween night, stepping back into the blood soaked corridors of the Raccoon City Police Department on the gray cartridge feels like uncovering a forbidden artifact. They forced a sprawling nightmare - complete with all the prerendered atmospheric dread, videos and spatial audio - onto a single N64 cartridge. The compression artifacts and gritty visual grain amplify the claustrophobia. Without disc-based load screens to break your tension at every door, Raccoon Citys terror flows continuously, trapping you in a relentless atmosphere where every creaking floorboard, groaning zombie and ambient shadow hits the mark. Add the Expansion Pak, and you get crisp 640x480 resolution to boot
When you boot up an N64 horror game on Halloween - is it Resident Evil 2? or is there another title that is even more terrifying?
Stepping away to handle core priorities quickly snowballed into maintenance mode when Little Quicksilver fell ill, followed by my own health getting hit hard. Real world obligations take absolute precedence, but I missed the interactions and conversations here.
We are through the worst of it. It's time to put the helmet back on. Expect to see me ramping my activity back up over the next couple of days 🧲

Now THIS is something worth paying attention to. Seeing game ownership being brought to the table is a step in the right direction, but physical media should NOT be excluded. I’ll be watching to see where this goes, because talk is one thing, action is another.
In the US, the next advances to get customers ownership over their games are now on the way.
Rep. Ritchie Torres is pushing the "Power To The Players Act", a legislation forcing the FTC to introduce proper customer protection.

Dear X,
As master of magnetism, I must occasionally step back to attend to more GROUNDING pursuits that ATTRACT me: family, enterprise and a new game preservation project I hope to share with everyone soon
I will be around but fleeting in time. Stay POSITIVE. I plan to return to normal activities next week 🧲
Highly recommend checking out @Retron8’s talk on pinball themes, narratives and general IP history. Even as a cartridge-first gamer, there were a few insights here that broadened my perspective 🧲
Sony fanboy account @TCMF2 should be embarrassed trying to downplay the #NoDiscNoBuy movement by twisting @TheCyabra case study!
They claim nearly 50% of the backlash was "fake accounts" by conflating a post comment metric with total conversation volume. Cyabra's data states inauthentic accounts drove only 25% of the broader movement - and "inauthentic" does not mean fake or bot-driven
What the report actually proves... 70.4% of all sentiment was negative and ownership grievances drove over half the outrage. Read the actual study next time🧲
Half of the PS5 NoDisc NoBuy backlash was fake finds new report
▫️ Nearly half of the replies to official PlayStation posts about the disc boycott came from fake accounts
▫️ Researchers identified 842 inauthentic accounts amplifying the backlash
▫️ Fake accounts generated over 1 million potential views and more than 113,000 engagements
▫️ Some boycott hashtags were amplified by bots in nearly 90% of cases
▫️ Genuine fans also drove significant engagement, showing the backlash was real
▫️ The online boycott appeared to have little impact on Sony’s business so far
So basically, the outrage was real, but fake accounts played a big role in it

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The post claims half the No Disc No Buy backlash was fake, but the cited Cyabra study found inauthentic accounts made up roughly 25% of the boycott narrative overall (up to 43% of replies to official PlayStation posts).

DK King of Swing stripped the gorilla down to two buttons and built one of the most misunderstood platformers
By mapping DKs entire movement scheme exclusively to Land R shoulder buttons to pivot, grip and propel off pegboards, the game completely abandoned traditional D-pad navigation. It forced players to relearn spatial momentum and timing from scratch. What looked like a simple spinoff was actually a masterclass in minimalist design - taking advantage of the GBAs tactile shoulder inputs to create a momentum driven rhythm game disguised as a climbing adventure
Did the two button peg mechanics click with you on the GBA? or did you prefer playing a more traditional DK game?

Optical discs almost ruined Rayman 2 but solving for N64s limitations made it the superior version worth playing
While most 32-bit transitions crumbled into blurry geometry and brutal difficulty spikes, Rayman 2 avoided those pitfalls with pure engineering prowess. Ubisoft bypassed the original game's sadistic difficulty in favor of immaculate platforming, leveraging enhanced resolution via Expansion Pak modes to squeeze a massive adventure onto a tight cartridge. By relying on real time audio sequencing, they delivered zero load times, butter smooth 3D physics and crisp visuals straight off physical silicon
Where does Rayman 2 rank in your N64 library compared to Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie? Let's hear it
A Monday reminder for the feed...
Do not let seamless digital storefronts trick you into surrendering your right to ownership. Every cartridge or disc in your hands is a fortress against server shutdowns and delistings
Have a productive week 🧲
Those expecting a mindless Hulk Smash game will be reminded of their comic ignorance!
The Incredible Hulk on the Sega Genesis was a masterclass in 16bit sadism. Between executing precise, fighter style inputs just to unleash the Hulk's true strength and navigating claustrophobic military complexes where the Hulk's massive momentum becomes an active hazard, the cartridge demands absolute discipline. The razor thin tension of being unceremoniously stripped down to a fragile, vulnerable Bruce Banner upon taking too much damage turns the title into a psychological endurance test
Did you manage to master the giant green brute or did you perish in human frailty as Bruce Banner?
The first sports game to establish the blueprint for turning a single game into a season ⚾️
Before deep career modes were an industry standard, Baseball Stars gave players the power to build a team from scratch, upgrade stats with hard earned cash, hire custom players, and even create rival female teams. It respected the player's investment of time and transformed a simple 8bit sports title into an endless loop of athletic empire building
What would you name your custom baseball team knowing it would be a dynasty?
Brilliant developer hack but please - refrain from physically assaulting 30yr old gaming history
With censorship out of the picture, Mortal Kombat 3 on SNES existed to prove 16bit silicon could out render Sega without cutting a single drop of blood🩸
The developers were tasked with fitting a massive arcade beast onto standard SNES cartridges without requiring addon hardware. The result was a technical masterclass - ROM banking, dense sprite scaling and audio compression gave the SNES superior visual accuracy and dynamic sound. While the Genesis version retained the faster speed and 6 button layout, the SNES port stands as the ultimate snapshot of the 16bit console wars
Did you prefer the sharper quality SNES version or did the Genesis speed and 6 button controls win out for you?
