New: At least 80% of Stacy Garrity's recent fundraising haul came from the operators and distributors of skill games, including $2 million from an Pittsburgh man accused by a grand jury of running an illegal gambling ring with his father. spotlightpa.org/news/2026/10…

I’ll be joining the @BaltimoreBanner next week as a reporter. I’m looking forward to joining an independent outlet that’s been hiring journalists who are accomplished but also adaptable enough to embrace new ways to engage with the communities and beats they cover. I’ll be based in my home county (Montgomery), where The Banner has been making inroads as it builds its brand in the capital region, while its parent nonprofit has expanded its reach by acquiring the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. It’s been an interesting,: slightly unnerving—but ultimately really gratifying— period since I resigned from The Baltimore Sun in June over concerns about the paper’s journalism. I’ll never forget the support I received from journalists and readers. My resignation post on X tapped into anxiety over losing independent reporting and voices across the country that many of us once took for granted. We know better now. I start at The Banner on Nov. 2. More here: jeffbarker8.substack.com/p/s…

Me whenever someone says I made a good point:
Brett Pesce on his game-winning goal against LA: "I don’t know. I don’t really think. I just kind of blacked out, so it’s not going to happen probably ever again." #NJDevils

Helping edit stories for a living means I'm perpetually upset when people get "further" and "farther" mixed up in casual conversation

No lie, if you got the ones that also allowed for A/V inputs so you could hook up consoles and other tech to them, these were no-brainer bargains back in the day before streaming services and smartphones.

The @UofMaryland Athletics Department has agreed to First Amendment training with FIRE after two student journalists were reported to campus police for “suspicious activity” while trying to interview @umterps football players. Student reporters should be able to do their jobs in public spaces without fear of unnecessary police encounters. We appreciate Maryland Athletics’ willingness to address these concerns. Public universities — including their athletic departments — have a duty to protect press freedom, not intimidate those exercising it.
For @testudotimes, @JudeWilkenfeld and I were outside Jones-Hill House trying to get players to comment. An athletics staffer took pictures of us, and a police dispatch was called for suspicious activity; a cop and 2 cop cars pulled up, and officers ID’d us and asked us to leave.

Earlier, I tweeted a video from an Abdul El-Sayed town hall. I deleted that tweet because it was a violation of CBS News standards. I apologize.

Having watched The Lighthouse after seeing Primetime and The Odyssey this year I can confidently say that Robert Pattinson has complete control over his mouth in ways the rest of us just do not. xitter.cf/7athaus/status/2111130…

Merrill College students know their rights as journalists. "Cat Murphy is a master's student at the University of Maryland, credentialed as a reporter for our Capital News Service and doing the job we teach our students to do. Cat recorded openly in a public space alongside other news outlets, and that is her legal right," Dean Rafael Lorente (@DeanLorente) said. "I'm proud of how she handled herself in a difficult situation."
Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.

Shoutout to @CNSmd reporter Cat Murphy for standing ten toes down and asking the question anyway. Also, shoutout to our colleagues who supported her. @RepAndyHarrisMD is incorrect about how two-party works in Maryland.

I see people are being introduced to Rep. Andy Harris, a man who once said “I disregard and discount anything that involves the mainstream media press.” He's been hostile toward the media for as long as I can remember, dating back to when I covered MD's Eastern Shore in 2014.

He also represents a deeply conservative part of the state and has won every general election since 2010 by double-digit percentage points. This year, he received more votes in the Republican primary (54,122) than all of the Democrats did in their primary combined (42,824).

A large portion of his base are older adults/retirees (41% of his district is 50+ y/o) who are not on this platform. The closest any Dem got to unseating him was Heather Mizeur in 2022, when 50,000+ ppl participated in the Dem primaries, compared to ~43,000 this year.
