Philip Larkin on Stevie Smith's poetry:
In 1962 Philip Larkin wrote a review of Stevie Smith's (1902-1971) Selected Poems. "Her poems, to my mind, have two virtues: they are completely original, and now and again they are moving. These qualities alone set them above 95 per cent of present-day output." #larkin #poetry

We mark the recent death of sometime #Hull resident, poet Douglas Dunn, with this 1972 picture of his house 4 Terry St, with the car (his?) parked outside, proving what he says in his poem 'Removal from Terry Street': "There is no grass in Terry Street." @PLSoc @hull_libraries

Ach, what a loss. I lived down the road from Terry Street when I was a student at Hull, and he was so fondly remembered there. ‘I wish him grass’
Very sorry to report that Douglas Dunn has passed away. He was the finest Scottish poet of the post-war period. Dougie was also someone we knew and loved as a dear friend, mentor and teacher, and he will be deeply missed.

Imagine hearing this for the first time. The song Philip Larkin thought was probably the most beautiful in the world.
“Mr. Tambourine Man” by Bob Dylan was recorded on this day in 1965.

I was sad to read of the death of the poet Douglas Dunn. A quiet voice, always a resonant one, probably still best known for his first mature poetry collection 'Terry Street', 1969, but 'Elegies', 1985, stands one of the great collections of the late 20th Century.

The preface is written by Brenda Moon (Larkin’s former deputy at Hull) and the essay was first presented at the annual winter meeting of the Friends of Edinburgh University Library on 2nd December 1986. A brilliant self-deprecating tribute to Larkin.

The new edition of Roger Lewis's biography of Charles Hawtrey has an excellent additional chapter where (amongst other things) he maps some of the individuals in PL's poems to the Carry On team. Hawtrey is Mr. Bleaney, of course.
