The environment as a tool of control. Environmental restoration as a form of resistance to imperialism. @TeklehaymanotG presents on the civil war in Ethiopia and how the environment has always been political in the #Tigray region. @POLLENCon2023
Conservation labour: Tishant Simlai says he’s talked to forest workers in India who work with dogs - where the government investment in the dog is 100x what the human workers earn. #POLLEN23
Conservation labour: @GeoFrancisMasse looks at militarised conservation and talks with rangers who do things they don’t necessarily want to, but because it’s their ‘job’. The aim to ‘combat wildlife trafficking’ is a big part of how some rangers now see their role. #POLLEN23
The labour involved in conservation is itself used as a source of surplus value. And conservation that involves communities includes a lot of uncompensated labour too, says @Anthropogo. #POLLEN23
Plenary on ‘conservation labour’ - @anweshadatta says there’s a lot of *work* going on in conservation, but it’s not often thought about through the lens of ‘labour’. A new project, CONLAB, is looking into this. #POLLEN23

“Existing commons are everywhere, but they’re often invisiblised by bigger institutions and the stories they tell.”
@Anthropogo suggests that commons show that better worlds are possible: @PolEcoNet is itself a commons, but commons is just one word & way of seeing. #POLLEN23
