Why isn’t PSSD officially recognized in America?
PSSD stands for Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction. I actually take issue with the name. “Dysfunction” makes it sound like a temporary little malfunction that will come back. For many people, it’s much more serious than that.
Right now in America, it’s only recognized in the drug label for Prozac, which mentions reports of sexual dysfunction that doesn’t go away. In the EU, that warning covers all SSRIs and SNRIs.
That’s what many of us in this space are pushing for here. A warning across all SSRIs and SNRIs, and a “Dear Doctor” letter that goes out to the family doctors, gynecologists and psychiatrists who prescribe them most. That would be real recognition.

My local ICB within NHS England have now failed to start investigating my complaint about #PSSD for 10 months. I haven't been given a timeline for the investigation or an explanation for the delay, despite NHS complaints regulations requiring one after 6 months.

This 23-year-old just exposed a massive conspiracy by the FDA and Eli Lilly to cover up the truth about SSRIs.
“People have been screaming into the void about this.”
“People have ended their lives.”
“No one’s listening to us.”
Bookmark this.
Lauren Friedman revealed that Zoloft left her permanently unable to feel love, emotional connection, or sexual pleasure.
And she is far from alone.
“There has been seemingly an intentional cover-up by pharmaceutical industry.”
“Prozac … was interfering with normal sexual development for kids who were prescribed these at a young age.”
European regulators reported this to Eli Lilly.
“Eli Lilly responded … ‘We will run clinical trials to see if this is true or not, we just need approval of the drug first in childhood use.’”
“They approved it.”
“The tests were never done.”
“And then just still gave it to children.”
“The FDA has known about this for decades.”
“Senator Chuck Grassley … wrote to the FDA.”
“The FDA responded and said that there isn’t sufficient evidence to suggest that this is because of the SSRI.”
“In 2018 … there was a petition that was submitted to the FDA begging the FDA to add this to labels.”
“The FDA, they were supposed to respond in … 180 days.”
“They never did.”
“2024, there was a lawsuit against the FDA for ignoring this.”
“They threw it out on a technicality.”
“One of the really sad parts about this is a lot of the young people who signed the petition in 2018 went on to kill themselves.”
“A young woman … wrote a really heartfelt note to the FDA saying, ‘I feel like my human rights have been violated.’”
“‘I can no longer feel joy or love, have sex.’”
“‘My life has been destroyed.’”
“She ended up killing herself shortly after.”
“It should be pretty obvious that living without the ability to feel pleasure sexually and emotionally, or feel love, is unlivable.”
“We’re put on Earth to experience love and connection.”
“No one’s looking into this.”
“For me, had the label been updated in 2018, I would have never taken it.”
“I took it in 2022.”

Here is some important news about the UK drug regulator finally acknowledging that "antidepressants" cause Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) and suicidality and homicidality on them is not limited to children and young adults. rxisk.org/mhra-announces-new…

Last year, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced an expert review into #antidepressants, driven by patient concerns. The review is now concluded.
During the review, patients and their families worked with the MHRA to share their concerns—the outcome was to strengthen existing warnings relating to suicidal thoughts and behaviours, and persistent sexual dysfunction after stopping antidepressants.
Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (#PSSD) is acknowledged in the wording.

The UK is updating antidepressant warnings to recognize PSSD (post-SSRI sexual dysfunction) and acknowledge that sexual side effects can continue long after stopping treatment.
It's time for the FDA to follow suit.
But sadly this still isn't enough. These injuries extend far beyond sexual dysfunction, causing devastating, lasting cognitive and emotional impairments.
People deserve to be fully informed about what they are risking before making a decision that could potentially affect them for the rest of their lives. @PSSDNetwork

Surreal to see the NIH Director @NIHDirector_Jay talking about PSSD—an injury long dismissed, with victims told by doctors their antidepressant induced harm wasn’t real.
For years it was relegated to Reddit forums and hidden corners of the internet: an abandoned community of devastated lives desperately seeking answers, with no one listening.
These are real people unjustly left to suffer, stripped of fundamental parts of their humanity. We cannot leave them behind. We urgently need research into the underlying mechanisms and a path toward recovery. #pssd @PSSDNetwork @elliotbewick @lololizzle

"I can't feel love for my own mother." Lauren Freedman is 23. She took Zoloft in 2022.
Lauren lives with post-SSRI sexual dysfunction, or PSSD. I believe it's the worst side effect an antidepressant can cause.
She describes complete genital numbness, no libido, and no ability to orgasm. And it didn't go away when she stopped the drug.
Most people hear that and assume it can't be true. But it's already in the US Prozac label, buried in the adverse reactions: sexual dysfunction occasionally persists after stopping.
In the EU, it's in the warnings for all SSRIs and SNRIs. Same in Australia, Canada and Hong Kong. In the US, it's only on Prozac.
Sexual side effects are among the most common on SSRIs. Lauren cites 50 to 70% of patients. The drugs are so reliable at this that they're even used off-label to chemically castrate sex offenders.
But here's the part my patients hate most. It's not the sex.
I've talked to nearly 50 people with PSSD. What they hate most is feeling like they move through life with no soul. No tingle when their favorite childhood song plays. No warmth when they hug their kids.
Lauren was a songwriter since childhood. She says that's been completely severed.
Sufferers petitioned the FDA in 2018 to add this risk to the labels. I used to work at the FDA. Companies get an answer on a full drug application within nine months. This petition has sat for years.
And when people develop PSSD, many get told they're paranoid or imagining it.
How common is it? Honestly, we don't know. I've seen estimates like 1 in 300.
That's why I always encourage people to try the non-drug approaches to depression and anxiety first. And if you're already on an SSRI, ask your doctor about this risk. If you decide to come off, don't stop suddenly. Taper slowly.

Good to see the MHRA are going to make information about persistent sexual dysfunction and suicidal ideation induced by antidepressants more prominent. I hope it will be more than a line or two in the small print of the drug package inserts which no one reads anyway.
The MHRA is introducing a series of new measures to strengthen how risks associated with antidepressant medicines are communicated to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Read the full drug safety update here: brnw.ch/21x6qlr

Great to see more coverage of the still little known fact that antidepressants can cause persistent sexual dysfunction after they are stopped. It can go on for years and it is critical that people know about it before deciding to start these drugs.
Antidepressants ruined my sex life... and I'm still suffering the side effects nearly 15 years later. Now I realise I didn't need the pills to begin with. You must think before taking these drugs trib.al/Cy6zLRo
