I am appalled by the vile racist attacks on my independent colleagues. Ayoub Khan has been subject to disgusting smears by MPs and journalists, who have wilfully misrepresented his views in order to stoke anger and division. Journalists have called for Zarah Sultana to be deported — a despicable racist attack on an elected Member of Parliament. The decision to prohibit away supporters from attending a match against Aston Villa was made through the lens of public safety. That is what most people would hope and expect, and explains why this decision has public support. My independent colleagues in parliament — Ayoub, Zarah, Iqbal, Shockat and Adnan — diligently represent people of all faiths and none in their communities. We believe in the human rights of all — and we will never stop campaigning for a more equal, peaceful world.
