So much fun to once again be part of the int'l law and pop culture symposium over at @opiniojuris! There's plenty of really cool pieces, so make sure to check it out. I wrote a little thing about accusations of #genocide in @cwthe100, feel free to give it a read, too!

Three thoughts on these amazing #fossil #repatriation news.
1) It's great to see a return from the UK since I don't see a lot of cultural property being repatriated from there - I guess it's easier if the artefacts are in a dealership and not in a museum yet. /1

2) The inconsistent terminology is striking. The Brazilian Embassy celebrates a win for Brazil's "natural and cultural heritage", the police officer spoke of "natural heritage". This issue is nicely explored here: link.springer.com/article/10… /2
3) UK law differs from most Continental European legal system in not allowing good faith purchases of stolen objects. Accordingly, if the dealer didn't acquire the fossils in such a jurisdiction, there's no way they had title to it. Cf. this case: plone.unige.ch/art-adr/cases… /end

Great to see some South-South cooperation in the repatriation of fossils!
⭕️ 🇨🇱 - 🇲🇦 Chilean authorities returned 117 fossils dating back 400 million years to Morocco. The artefacts had been seized from smugglers by Chilean customs officials.

If you are interested in Changing Approaches Towards Restitution and Return of Colonial Heritage, please register for our Int symposium on 23-24 May in Leiden universiteitleiden.nl/en/eve… @GrotiusCentre @LeidenLaw
Publication alert: Our talk "Law Will Find a Way: Legal Research at the Intersection with Palaeontology" that @mauritiantales, @emmadnn and I gave at @JTOER24 last summer is now an #OpenAccess book chapter! [1/2]
We outline Law and Palaeontology (aka #dinosaurlaw) as a field of research: how it works, why it's needed, why it's special. Brand new case studies (e.g., mammoth ivory) included! Don't miss it: nomos-elibrary.de/10.5771/97… [2/2]
This is something I'm wondering about. "Donation" in repatriation contexts implies the transfer of good title - but what if no good title has been acquired to the fossils by the person returning it? (Which probably is the case for many Brazilian fossils)

2.5 years after @DrDonnaYates' call for PhD candidates in #dinosaurlaw, I'm excited to announce that I'll be doing precisely this: a PhD on Law and Palaeontology at @lawinmaastricht! Starting date tbc - but from then, I'll be doing dinosaur law full-time for 4 years. Can't wait!

Replying to @PStewens @undarkmag
We also highlighted it in @NewsfromScience science.org/content/article/…
ICYMI I wrote an op-ed for @undarkmag about stolen #fossils from #Crimea. It's scandalous to me how little this is being talked about when it should be the next Myanmar amber controversy. Read about in via the link below!
#FossilFriday
According to legal scholar @PStewens, Russia is flouting international law by removing fossils from a Crimean cave. Are academic publishers ignoring the theft of Ukrainian fossils?
