Mark Carney explains how the new Canada-EU relationship will strengthen the sovereignty of both jurisdictions; it allows us to live our lives as we chose. My view: Carney argues that sovereignty isn't simply about national borders or political independence. It's about having the economic strength, security and resilience to make your own decisions, free from coercion or dependence on more powerful nations. He wants an ambitious new alliance built around shared democratic values, greater trade, energy security, defence cooperation, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, research and technology. He also sees enormous opportunities for young Canadians and Europeans to study, work and travel across the Atlantic. Importantly, Carney insists this isn't about creating another geopolitical superpower seeking to dominate others. It's about ensuring that neither Canada nor Europe can be bullied into surrendering its independence. And he believes deeper cooperation will improve prosperity, affordability and security, while protecting people's freedom to live their lives as they choose. here is something remarkably refreshing about hearing a political leader articulate sovereignty as something that can actually be strengthened through international cooperation. For years, particularly during Britain's Brexit debate, we were repeatedly sold the idea that sovereignty was a finite commodity. That working closely with our European neighbours somehow meant surrendering control. Carney challenges that entire premise. What good is theoretical sovereignty if your economy is increasingly exposed to external pressures, your businesses face unnecessary barriers, your young people have fewer opportunities and your country becomes more dependent on decisions taken elsewhere? The ability to make decisions independently means very little if circumstances leave you with increasingly limited choices. Real sovereignty isn't simply the freedom to stand alone. It's having the strength, relationships and economic capacity to determine your own future. And in a world where Donald Trump has demonstrated how readily trade, tariffs and economic dependence can become instruments of political pressure, that distinction matters enormously. Canada isn't abandoning its national identity or democratic independence by developing closer relations with Europe. It is seeking to protect both. There is a lesson here for Britain, too. We should be asking ourselves whether the barriers we've erected between Britain and our largest neighbouring trading bloc have genuinely made us stronger, wealthier and more independent, or whether they've simply made everyday life more difficult while reducing our influence. Carney offers a vision of international cooperation rooted not in nostalgia or nationalistic slogans, but in practical economic realities, shared democratic principles and opportunities for future generations. Sovereignty should be measured not merely by the powers a country possesses on paper, but by the choices its people can actually exercise in their lives. That's a much more meaningful definition of freedom, and one that Britain's political debate could learn a great deal from.
