At one time, a learned Catholic doctor, engaged Tyndale in a controversy exclaiming,
"It were better for us to be without Godās law than without the popeās."
Tyndale famously vowed:
"I defy the Pope and all his laws. If God spare my life ere many years, I will cause the boy who drives the plow to know more of the Scriptures than you."
Tyndale, who successfully translated the New Testament from the original Greek into English before being betrayed, strangled, and burned at the stake, wrote in The Exposition of the First Epistle of John:
"The Pope's authority is the very kingdom of Antichrist, standing in the place of Christ, yet acting directly against Him... He sits in the temple of God, which is the souls of men, binding their consciences with laws of his own making, and throwing out the free grace of the Gospel."

Self-righteousness is hypocrisy because it pretends the judge and the defendant are different people. Jesusā picture is the man thanking God he is not like the tax collector (Luke 18:9ā14). That posture is already condemned before a single āworldlyā Christian is named.
Sanctification does not empty the heart of sin in this life. āIf we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselvesā (1 John 1:8). Paul is an apostle and still says the good he wants he does not do (Romans 7:19ā25). So a Christian who is actually being made holy is the last person who should talk as if the gap between them and a weaker brother is the gap between Sinai and rebellion.
That is why the default posture is mercy. āRestore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be temptedā (Galatians 6:1). āJudgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgmentā (James 2:13). Jesus: the measure you use will be measured back to you (Matthew 7:1ā5). Log first, then speck.
The qualifier: mercy is not the same as calling sin fine. Jesus is full of grace and truth (John 1:14). Paul can weep over sin and still say ādo not get drunk,ā āflee sexual immorality,ā āput to death what is earthly in you.ā The hypocrite condemns from a clean perch he does not have. The sanctified person tells the truth with a limp, as someone still in the process.
So, condemning first, even sins you wouldnāt commit yourself, is always self righteousness. The Christian order is receive mercy, walk in the light, then speak to others as a fellow debtor, not as the bench.

Then a student asked about mass shooters.

Those were his last words.
A single shot from a rooftop 150 yards away hit him in the neck. He was 31. Husband. Father of two.
Dead by mid-afternoon.
He spent his entire adult life walking onto college campuses to argue in public.
He died doing exactly that.

Folks, thereās something we need to discuss, and itās going to be hard to hear. In some churches, we have an acute worship song leader problem. Many arenāt leading others in singing but performing for others in ways that make congregational singing challenging. When a lead singer engages in rhythmic displacement, unexpected syncopation, melodic embellishment, lyrical improvisation, and vocalization only professionals can pull off, this isnāt leading worship. At best, itās performance. Or worse, itās showing off. From now on if this is happening, Iām not even going to try to sing along. Iām going to be quiet and listen and enjoy the show, because at that point itās just entertainment, and Iām the audience.

Constance Fisher drowned her three children in a bathtub in 1954.
Mental hospital. Declared better. Released.
Husband stayed. They had three more kids.
She drowned those three too.
Same house. Same bathtub. Same excuse. Six dead children because a system treated a child killer like a patient who just needed time.
That is the whole argument. Not āwas she sad.ā Not ādid she hear voices.ā What happens after you let them out, and who pays for it the second time.
Lindsay Clancy strangled her three kids. People are already writing her a sympathy card and calling prison cruel. Cruel is three little bodies. Cruel is doing it once and getting a path back to freedom. Cruel is pretending history didnāt already run this experiment and lose six kids.
Mental illness can explain how someone gets there. It does not give you a free murder. It does not entitle you to more children. And it does not require the rest of us to wait around and see if the next round dies too.
If you kill your kids, you donāt get to be a mother again. You donāt get a soft landing and a second family. Life without parole. Lock the door. Stop experimenting on other peopleās children and making excuses.
Convict her. Convict those who harm children. Period.

Holiness, blameless, love, deep relationship, every spiritual blessing. This is what predestination points to.

Calvinism distorts the meaning of predestination and redefines it to mean regeneration and salvation. At the same time they eliminate or downgrade what we actually get with predestination.

having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
This verse is about enjoying sonship that God promises to all who believe.
Sonship is no small thing. In fact, it is the whole point of the gospel. When you turn sonship into merely regeneration, you miss what the apostle is actually declaring. This versus a promise of deep and intimate relationship with God. It is not a promise of salvation for some people. Itās a promise that we can know Him as a father, and that this relationship cannot be taken from us.
God is wanting us to know Him. What is absent from this verse is the idea of regeneration. This verse is all pointed at relationship with God. None of it is talking to forgiveness.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, [4] just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
See the contact is all the stuff. God wants to give us as sons. The predestination is for those who were already redeemed. Those who were already regenerated. God is predestined what heās going to give to those who seek Him for salvation. There is no context about God predestining us for salvation. It doesnāt speak to forgiveness, but instead of all the things that you get after the cross. Every predestination verse is like this. All pointing to the benefits that sons get. And sonship being the biggest benefit. None of them point to any aspect of redemption. They donāt talk about salvation. They donāt talk about regeneration. They donāt talk about forgiveness.
But instead, they talk about growth, maturity and intimacy.
The other side that is completely eliminated by Calvinist doctrine from these passages is that they declare that we cannot be holy in this life. Yet this section of verses is declaring that God is predestined holiness is part of your inheritance.

The starting point for me is God's character. God declares He is love, just, and merciful and wants the entire world to have a saving knowledge of Him. I then work my way out from there. My destination leads me to libertarian free will.
If God preordained every act, every atrocity, and unbelief, then people cannot justly be blamed nor praised for what they were decreed to do or know. That makes God unjust.
God loved the world so much that He declared His message would be exported to all nations (Isaiah 49:6) and Christ fulfilled that in John 3:16. Yet even before Christ, God always accepted the stranger into the community of believers who willingly put their trust in Him (Isaiah 56:3-7).
How is it that Calvinists can say that God truly wanted "the world" to have knowledge and faith in Him if He ordained, before the foundation of the world, that He created some to be elected to knowledge and faith while creating others to be reprobates? You can't put a square peg in a round hole.
The total witness of Scripture expresses a God who genuinely invites, warns, gives choices, and holds people responsible for what has been made known to them. The name āIsraelā means āhe who wrestles with God,ā which presupposes an honest ability to wrestle.
He gave us the capacity to approach Him without creating a change in our disposition in order to do so. Romans 1:19ā20, and Romans 2:14ā16 tells us so. Even Jesus holds people accountable to what they know and believe in Matthew 11:20-24. That is a truly just God.
Love, in its very essence, requires genuine agency from the outset. If God is love, then human freedom is a prerequisite for what comes next. This has been the case since the Garden of Eden.
The reality of God's glory is not dependent upon man having a change in their state of being to acknowledge it. Creation itself bears witness to its Creator. Look at Psalm 96:11ā12, Psalm 98:7ā8, Luke 19:40, and Habakkuk 2:11.
Can all of Creation know but man be disabled from the same perception? That would be absurd as God created us to be His witnesses as His image bearers.
