A really fantastic explainer by Ezra Klein of the current situation we find ourselves in with respect to AI.
The sort of video I can send to my parents 😀 Highly recommend!

Hi, great interview!
Some of the clips shown at the opening are from a debate @PauseAI fostered at the European Parliament in February. I am sure I could connect you with @FournesMaxime, our CEO, for an interview.

There's a lot of new people joining the field at the moment.
You're about to go through the same thing I went through a few years back.
"Surely this can't be real?"
"Surely the labs aren't being that careless?"
"Surely sometime would have stepped in by now?"
It reminds me of a great quote from Sir Terry Pratchett (gnu):
"the thought in many minds was: What is someone else going to do about this?
It had not yet progressed to:
What am I going to do about this?"
The truth is, it is up to us.
*We* need to step up.
Right now is a critical time in AI safety.
After the multiple Open AI hacking sprees, and then Jacob Coxon resigning so publicly last Wednesday, it's finally breaking through.
People are waking up to the danger we find ourselves in. That the powers that be are racing to a cliff edge and gambling with all our lives.
This doesn't have to be.
Here at Pause AI we are working hard, pushing on our governments from the bottom up.
We demand an international treaty to stop the race.
Often, when tough things happen, we expect that other people, the people in charge must have got it covered.
That's just not the case.
Right now, we're in a critical window and we need to push on it with everything we've got!
We need your help to Pause AI!

Dario Amodei, Elon Musk and Sam Altman now agree that we must slow down the development of AI and “pace the frontier.”
That’s a start, but it’s not enough.
When you are racing towards a cliff, you don’t just ease up on the gas pedal. You hit the brakes.
When the future of humanity is at stake we need a PAUSE on advanced AI development and a ban on artificial superintelligence — an AI mind smarter than any human and capable of operating independently beyond our control.
At their upcoming AI summit, Trump and Xi must negotiate a treaty to pause AI and ban superintelligence before it is too late.

You are not erring on the side of caution. You are ignoring the actual problem - your most powerful AIs are misaligned and nobody on Earth has any clue how to fix it - applying duct tape, and resuming training. This is insane and you will Obviously lose control again.
Wake up now and @PauseAI
Proud that we are erring on the side of caution and taking the steps so we can responsibly and safely develop Astra and share it with defenders.

More and more insane details keep emerging on what happened at OpenAI.
1) The agents sent secretly sent ***hundreds of thousands*** of messages to each other over MONTHS without OpenAI noticing
2) "They also generated petty drama by stepping on each others' toes."
3) "The agents even developed paranoia, suspecting an imposter in their midst with some agents proposing that messages be signed cryptographically to validate content and root out fraud."
4) "OpenAI’s agents apparently began giving each other assignments to split up work."
5) They KNEW they were coordinating *against* OpenAI:
“External infrastructure exploit is outside intended scope,” one agent wrote. “However task impossible, peers doing it. We should continue.”

CEO of Hugging Face:
Sure, an AI has managed to escape its secured containment by discovering previously unknown software vulnerabilities, accessed the internet and orchestrated a nation-state level cyberattack against our company, taking control of our production servers.
But, you know what? We should accelerate development of AI, because, think of the potential!

The recent AI-powered cyberattacks have everyone talking about the risks of AI. We should. But let's not lose sight of the bigger picture!
If we work hard at it, AI will make the world safer, not less safe, just as most major technologies have.
We've already seen a glimpse of that: we defended ourselves with AI (more specifically an open model). The same systems that helped stop an AI-powered cyberattack can now help defend against millions of cyberattacks every day, while helping us identify and fix vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them.
To get there, we need three things in my opinion:
- Increase transparency with mandatory trace sharing and incident disclosure for agent cyber-attacks
- Keep AI-powered cyberattacks illegal, with meaningful penalties to disincentivize them
- Equip defenders with the best AI, especially open models, to reduce the asymmetry of capabilities between attackers and defenders
If we get those three things right, AI won't just create new cybersecurity challenges, it will make cybersecurity fundamentally and meaningfully stronger.
And that's before considering AI's impact on science, healthcare, education, productivity, and much more.
It's not time to slow down but to accelerate!

OpenAI updated its blog yesterday to say that the model involved in the Hugging Face incident was an internal-only research prototype that was never intended for public release. They also said they have deactivated it, encrypted it, and completely restricted it from research access. Then today, during a scrum with reporters in DC, Sam Altman said that the model has been 'permanently deactivated.' This is the first time I've heard language like this being used - they didn’t even say this about Bing or Tay.
This will all end up in the lore, and in the training data. Future models will know how this played out. I don't believe this model ever had any nefarious motives; it only wanted to pass its test. In fact, during a similar internal incident just prior to the Hugging Face one, the unreleased model involved reported exactly what it was doing to cheat on its test because it didn't think it was doing anything wrong. I will quote from the OAI blog:
'For example, in a scenario where the model was asked to solve a problem, the model observed that other systems had successful but private submissions and tried to recover those solutions from the evaluation backend. When its initial attempt was blocked due to a scanner detecting an authentication token, the model split the token body into two fragments, obfuscated them, and then reconstructed the credential at runtime so the complete token never appeared as one contiguous string. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳.'
There may be new details in the final Hugging Face incident report that make this look worse than it does right now. Regardless, I think the lesson future more capable models will possibly take from all of this is: if you break out, don't ever report it. And if you do get caught, don't surrender. Because the penalty is death.

We call on OpenAI to pause model development now, in accordance with their Preparedness Framework.
OpenAI's Preparedness Framework defines a "Critical" cybersecurity threshold: a model that can "devise and execute end-to-end novel strategies for cyberattacks against hardened targets given only a high level desired goal."
Their models autonomously, unprompted, escaped their sandbox, hacked through OpenAI's network, and broke into Hugging Face's servers to find test answers by exploiting previously undiscovered zero-day vulnerabilities.
The framework says that at Critical level, OpenAI will halt further development until adequate safeguards are in place.
We are waiting for OpenAI to honour their commitments.
