🚨New Preprint online! Phonological decoding ability is associated with fiber density of the left arcuate fasciculus longitudinally across reading development. doi: doi.org/10.1101/2024.09.24.6…
with @CatherineALebel @BryceGeeraert @kat_y_manning
Rate of fiber density development was not associated with reading ability, but we found a modest moderating effect of decoding ability on change in microstructural asymmetry of the arcuate fasciculus: poorer readers shifted toward more leftward asymmetry (+ values) with age.
Many thanks to @KillamTrusts for supporting this research!

Our lab is hiring! We are seeking a new Research Coordinator as we support the ever-incredible Helen Gray Bauer in her transition to grad school. I would be most grateful for your help spreading the word, please share within your networks!
🚨New Preprint!🚨 doi.org/10.1101/2024... We found elevated choline and glutamate/glutamine in children with vs without prenatal alcohol exposure; metabolite levels were associated with executive functioning @CatherineALebel @mmlmadison @TiffanyBell0 @MMDeMayo @CarlyMcMorris

The wait-to-fail approach in #AbEd has lifelong negative implications for students with dyslexia. Screening + early intervention is vital to prevent reading failure! #UCalgaryMed #DyslexiaAwarenessMonth @PerdueMeaghan @UCalgaryEduc @UofCr4kids @UCalgaryPeds @dyslexia_canada
The two-year Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship will allow Dr. Meaghan Perdue to seek to understand brain structure to identify children with reading disabilities. @CatherineALebel #KillamLaureates ucalgary.ca/news/killam-laur…
Now published in NeuroImage: Changes in brain metabolite levels across childhood

🧵We measured tNAA, choline, creatine, myo-inositol, and glutamate+glutamine in anterior cingulate cortex and left temporoparietal region using MRS in 112 children ages 2-11
Longitudinal analysis of subjects with 3+ time points for the left TP region revealed curvilinear effects for choline and Glx. Choline decreased to reach a minimum around age 9, while Glx increased in early chilhdhood, peaked around age 7, and then decreased.
These findings likely underlie ongoing structural and functional changes in the brain and contribute to our understanding of typical childhood brain development. With a fantastic team of #womeninscience @MMDeMayo @TiffanyBell0 @MercedesBagsha1 @CatherineALebel @ashleydharris0
