Seems like a good day to re-up some basic math.
If AI isn't going to wipe out millions of jobs every year, it has to generate productivity gains of about 7% pa in order to justify the capex. Impossible. So someone has to lose money Big Tech Has Suddenly Flipped on the AI Jobs Wipeout Scenario wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-workers-t… via @WSJ

Recently I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about being asked to clean an Airbnb when they’ve already paid a cleaning fee As a host, I find this attitude quite worrying My wife and I rent out the apartment in Germany. We charge a €145 cleaning fee, and we still expect guests to: 1. Strip the beds and start a wash, separating whites from colours 2. Wash, dry and put away all dishes 3. Sweep and mop the floors 4. Take out all rubbish, separating paper, cardboard, clear glass, coloured glass, plastics, metal, organic waste and residual waste 5. Take bottles with a deposit to the supermarket return machine. 6. Send photos showing the apartment is ready before the 8:30am checkout These tasks must be completed before departure. If you have an early flight, allow time the evening before The cleaning fee pays for professional cleaning. It does not pay for someone to pick up after you Here in Europe, we teach children to leave a place as they found it I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the same from adults on holiday

I confess I’m @BillSimmons fan and dismissive of idea his obvious homer bias interferes with show. Until today when @blakegriffin23 starts telling him about weirdness of KD Kyrie Brooklyn nets and Simmons immediately interrupts redirects him to Jason Tatum. An interview atrocity

If I had a $TRUMP coin for every version of this take, I’d still have very little to bank on
Iran is in a desperate struggle to reassert some control over the Strait of Hormuz. That's what recent attacks on tankers are about. This is a sign of weakness. The regime has its back against the wall. Iran's economy is falling apart. The end game... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/…

Scott Bessent, at his confirmation hearing in Jan/2025 to be Treasury Secretary: "the tragedy going on in Ukraine is one of the greatest tragedies of my adult life ... I believe that the sanctions [on Russia] were not fulsome enough. I believe that the previous administration was worried about raising US energy prices during an election season... if I'm confirmed and if President Trump requests ...I will be 100% on board for taking sanctions up." Mark Warner (D-VA): "I very much appreciate your willingness and I hope you will be an advocate for keeping those sanctions on and actually advancing them even further." rev.com/transcripts/scott-be…
Today, at President Trump’s direction, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is immediately issuing a temporary general license to allow the supply of Russian diesel to the global market.

Trump went after Greenland for some of the right reasons—but in the wrong ways. We’ll discuss her new book, “Sea Change: America’s New Great Game in the Arctic Circle” • When Elon Musk’s DOGE waged its rapid assault on the federal bureaucracy, some civil servants tried to fight back. I’ll talk with author Michael Lewis, who tells some of their stories in his new book, “Blockers: Rebels in the Deep State”

Something pretty basic missing from a lot of these comparisons of French debt to US debt: the US prints its own currency, unlike France

America has just one ship in the Arctic: the Coast Guard cutter Healy. In the North Pole, I documented why maritime power equates to geopolitical power. Order my new book #SeaChange: America's New Great Game in the Arctic Circle, out October 6th at prh.com/seachange
