China wants to be the Global South’s best friend. That includes financing their infrastructure and making themselves very hard to replace. From African telecom networks to Southeast Asian data centers, Chinese investment is a Faustian bargain. It brings money for the political and business elite, but at the cost of economic and political dependence.
