Putin, Trump and MAGA love repeating the story that NATO betrayed Russia by expanding eastwards, supposedly breaking a promise never to admit countries once trapped under Soviet communist rule.
There is one rather inconvenient detail they always leave out: those countries desperately wanted to join.
And with good reason.
They remember Soviet occupation, political executions, mass deportations to Siberia, forced collectivisation, prison camps, secret police, censorship and generations of lives destroyed by Moscow’s glorious socialist paradise. Families disappeared. Countries lost their independence. Ordinary people could be imprisoned for expressing the wrong opinion.
When communism collapsed, these nations did not need NATO to persuade them to escape Russian influence. They practically ran towards the door.
Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czechia and the others understood something the MAGA intellectual establishment apparently struggles with: living next to Russia is considerably more pleasant when Russia cannot decide how you live.
And that brings us to Serbia.
Aleksandar Vučić, a leader who spent years cultivating Moscow while balancing Serbia’s European ambitions, has just been defeated by a student-led democratic movement. The celebrations in Belgrade tell their own story.
Serbia has its own complicated history, and nobody should pretend this election settles every question about NATO or EU membership. But it exposes the central absurdity of Moscow’s worldview.
When a European leader continually argues against Western integration while protecting Russia’s influence, the obvious question is whose interests he actually serves.
There is no need to invent secret payments to recognise a politician doing Moscow’s work.
NATO did not expand eastwards because Washington forced unwilling nations into an alliance. It expanded because countries with experience of Russian domination wanted protection from ever experiencing it again.
Putin, Orban, JD Vance, Hegseth and Trump calls that Western aggression.
Russia, meanwhile, has spent centuries discovering that keeping its neighbours within its sphere of influence generally requires threats, repression or an army.
That tells you almost everything about which civilisation has something worth offering.

Hard to imagine any former American president standing there ogling a woman he had just employed and verbally making comment about her body! He is beyond uncouth.

Imagine if you stood up at work and said “You know who has one hell of a beautiful ass? It’s Carol from accounting. Stand up Carol! Show them your ass!”
You’d be fired within the hour but the president gets a pass because everyone has accepted the fact that he’s a scumbag.

I'm a father of three daughters. I find it absolutely disgusting that so many people are okay with the most powerful person in our country objectifying women in this way.

I’m with @Peter_Fox59. Illuminating an important part of our nation’s history might make a vital contribution to cultural healing. Problem is- will there ever be a ‘right time’ to write such a book?🤔

I can’t watch, there will be outrage, condemnation by all governments and promises for extra funding and absolutely nothing will change. The industry is no different to every other industry that has been handed over to privatisation, profits rule above the safety of the young, the disabled, the old and all between.
If you're not watching the 4Corners story on violence & abuse of children in childcare, Warning - its horrific.
Childcare worker's 'monstrous' violence captured on CCTV
"If this had happened in the city, if this was in Brisbane or Sydney, there would be uproar," the 13-month-old's mother says.

Obama really clarified the gold fittings. Now Trump's redecorating of the White House makes perfect sense.

Join the call for Australia’s media companies to stand together by refusing to cover One Nation events until the access issue is resolved. Media companies should be insisting that One Nation accepts the attendance of ALL accredited journalists, not just the ones it perceives as unquestioning or supportive. We need a robust liberal democracy ... not a Trumpian perversion.

I saw no women being assaulted. I saw no nose picking. I saw no ear wax eating. I heard no stories about men’s asses. I heard no strange burping noises, no slurring, no moaning.
And I heard no songs about homosexual hook ups at the local gym while an old fat man wearing makeup danced like he was wanking 2 giraffes.
I didn’t see or hear any of that during Barack Obama’s speeches today.
Just an adult speaking in complete sentences to an audience who appreciated every word.
It was nice.

🇦🇺 🇺🇸 An Australian woman has a rather devastating response to Americans who insist that everyone loves the United States and secretly dreams of living there.
“Australians aren’t jealous of America, we mostly feel sorry for you.”
She also makes a much more interesting point. Believing that you already live in the greatest country on Earth is intellectually lazy. If you’ve been told your entire life that nowhere else comes close, why bother looking?
And that is precisely what makes this mentality so limiting.
Looking beyond your own borders should be a source of inspiration. Other countries do things better. Some have better healthcare, others better education, infrastructure or social protections. There is absolutely nothing unpatriotic about noticing this and asking why your own country cannot do the same.
Every country has its problems. Australia does. Norway does. America certainly does. Nobody has invented the perfect society.
But every country also has something worth learning from.
And perhaps that is the greatest irony of all. The people most convinced that America has nothing to learn from the rest of the world may be the very people preventing it from becoming better.

New research shows that 80 million Americans are afraid to express religious doubts. The documentary HEATHENS follows five of them when they stopped pretending, paid the price of truth, and rebuilt free, joyful lives. I found the film moving, even shocking.Catch an upcoming screening in SF, LA or NY. With US mid-terms coming up, it's a good time to examine beliefs and values.heathens.movie

After Elon Musk posted on X saying he had throttled Ukraine’s use of Starlink after it was used for offensive attacks, House Armed Services Committee member Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) says the billionaire’s ability to wield that power is “beyond disturbing to me.”
“It cannot and should not be the case that a tech oligarch, a private citizen, who has that much control over our national security, who is unaccountable, who is unelected, with zero transparency, is making life and death decisions on the battlefield in systems that our service members and our partners and allies rely upon,” he adds.

🚨 BREAKING: Ontario Premier Doug Ford just canceled Elon Musk’s Starlink contract and banned all U.S. companies from government contracts in response to Trump’s economic war with Canada.
“It’s done, it’s gone,” Ford said. “We won’t award contracts to people who enable and encourage economic attacks on our province and our country.”
And just to be clear: “They only have President Trump to blame.”
So Trump starts a trade war, and now American businesses are getting locked out of Canada. This isn’t “tough negotiating”—this is our closest ally shutting the door on us while Trump pretends he’s “winning.”
MAGA wanted an economic war? Well, they just got one. And it’s American companies and workers who are about to feel the pain.

The video is from Doug Ford's March 2025 press conference announcing the Starlink contract cancellation and US procurement ban amid 2025 tariff disputes, not a recent event; reports confirm it as a past decision.
