For my English-speaking followers, let's get the facts straight about the Stubb–Støre call with Putin. New reporting from Finland provides important details missing from much of the international debate. Some of the initial accusations now look rather premature. First, why did the call happen? According to President Stubb, Ukraine's peace negotiations were close to collapsing last week, with relations between Kyiv and Washington in serious trouble. Finnish sources suggest there was even a risk of the US disengaging from the process. At Zelenskyy's request, Finland and Norway organised the Oslo talks with American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, alongside other European representatives. The subsequent call to Putin was prepared with Ukraine and the US. According to Finnish sources, key allies were informed beforehand and briefed afterwards. Helsinki also wanted Ukraine to publicly confirm its support for the initiative. Zelenskyy has since explicitly defended the call and praised its transparency. Second, the controversy surrounding European coordination deserves clarification. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen accused Finland and Norway of acting independently and failing to coordinate with other European countries. But Stubb and Støre have both stated that allies were informed in advance and received detailed briefings afterwards. New reporting from Finnish news agency STT supports their account. There is an important distinction between not being informed, not being consulted on the decision, and fundamentally disagreeing with that decision. Frederiksen's criticism increasingly appears to reflect a disagreement over whether direct contact with Putin should happen at all, rather than simply a lack of notification. Her initial framing therefore risks creating a misleading impression of an uncoordinated diplomatic operation. Political disagreement should not be confused with evidence that Finland and Norway acted behind their allies' backs. Third, what actually happened during the call? Finnish broadcaster Yle and news agency STT have challenged the Financial Times' account of Putin delivering a lengthy history lecture to passive Nordic listeners. Their sources describe a substantive exchange in which Stubb and Støre questioned Putin about the upcoming Abu Dhabi negotiations and stressed that prolonging the war would not diminish European support for Ukraine. Freedom of navigation in the Baltic Sea, keeping maritime routes open and Russia's shadow fleet were also discussed. Finnish-Russian bilateral relations reportedly were not discussed at all. The parties agreed to keep the communication channel available. Fourth, the risks were understood from the beginning. Finnish sources say criticism and possible Russian propaganda exploitation were anticipated. One source described the initiative as values-based realism, which sometimes requires accepting political risks and their consequences. This was a calculated decision, not an improvised attempt to normalise relations with Moscow. Zelenskyy has also reminded critics that Putin's diplomatic isolation effectively ended with Trump's Alaska summit in 2025. Other European governments have maintained contacts with Russia, sometimes without comparable transparency towards Ukraine. Ukraine requested diplomatic assistance, and Finland and Norway responded in coordination with Kyiv and Washington. Supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary must also mean supporting it in the ways Ukraine actually asks for. That includes diplomacy. Europe needs military strength, economic pressure and diplomatic influence. These are complementary instruments, not competing alternatives.

Only three days after the Student List defeated Vučić’s autocratic regime in Serbia’s elections, he is already comparing the student movement to Pol Pot 🙄. This is gonna be a long, exhausting, tension-filled slog for the incoming government.

Rezultatet? Vrasjet së grave janë rritë 300%! Përgjegjësia? ZERO.

There was a campaign race in Serbia. Now there’ll be a race between Vucic to consolidate his levers of power and money - from city councils & media he controls to mafia - and on the other side Student List seeking to weaken the nexus of thuggery, crime, corruption and deep state.

Won’t comment on internal Serbian mudslinging after Serbian elections - though it’s entertaining - but interesting detail that Malagurski, a creepy nationalist “film-maker” was fundraising from millionaires in Serbia 100s of thousands of euros to make “film about Hashim Thaçi”…

Thread: No one really expects for the Student List in Serbia to embrace Kosovo independence. It’s also clear that the focus of the newly victorious movement will be the rule of law, corruption and “cleaning the house” after years of authoritarian and criminal governance. But… -1

There will NEVER again be dialogue between Serbian state on one side & an ethnicity on the other side. While Student List will be busy learning how to fight mafia, they should also start learning contemporary history. English excerpts from Bakic interview: petrits.substack.com/p/yes-t…

📺 “We reported events one-sidedly for years”: Serbian TV apologizes to viewers after Vučić's party loses the election Radio Television of Vojvodina (RTV) opened its news broadcast with footage of celebrations following the Student List's election victory — scenes it had failed to show the previous evening. “For years, we failed to fulfill our duty. We kept silent, turned a blind eye, reported events one-sidedly, and failed to ask the necessary questions. For that, we owe our viewers an apology,” news anchor Goran Eror said. Following the controversy, RTV's acting editor-in-chief Nenad Čačić resigned. A similar incident occurred in Hungary, where state television also apologized to viewers after Viktor Orbán's election defeat.
🎉🎉 Serbia celebrates Vučić's defeat all night — now he's warning the country about sanctions against Russia After 14 years of Aleksandar Vučić's political dominance, his bloc has lost the snap parliamentary elections. The opposition Student List, which emerged from mass anti-government protests, has claimed victory. According to preliminary figures from Ipsos and CeSID, the students secured around 53% of the vote, while Vučić's coalition received approximately 39%. The former president acknowledged defeat. He estimated that the winners could secure 135–140 seats in Serbia's 250-member parliament. But he couldn't resist issuing a warning about Russia. Vučić claimed the new government could impose sanctions on Moscow as early as March or April. Meanwhile, Belgrade and other Serbian cities celebrated the student movement's victory throughout the night, with car horns, singing, and crowds cheering in the streets. Final election results are still pending.

Protests tomorrow in Prishtina after another woman is killed by her brother in law. She asked for support by courts & police saying her life is threatened. Justice minister yesterday was scandalous, stating that the victim “should have contacted us, maybe we could have helped” 😡
Another woman killed by her so-called husband in Kosovo. This is just utterly devastating. The victim wrote a letter to prosecution and institutions only three days ago that her life is in danger. No one lifted a finger to prevent the grave crime. nacionale.com/sq/articles/tr…

There’s one Hebrew word I always recognize because we use it too: “chaver” or Haver - a Hebrew word for friend. I imagine it came to usage in Albanian in Kosovo (less so in Albania) via Germany / Yiddish.
