"Mr. Pope, my God Claude is making some dope music videos that will totally cook motion designers!"
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

I don't know how many times I have to keep saying this. What about the Orson Welles theatrical off-Broadway Digger? Are we just pretending he didn't win the Tony for his take on Digger?
I repeat - we can only judge the true Digger when the movie debuts. Are we just forgetting Timothy Dalton's take on Digger? Much maligned at the time, it has a lot of nuance that's underappreciated.
Tom Cruise IS Digger? Seems a little dismissive of the others who have taken on the role. I, for one, prefer the Giamatti Digger, but I respect those who think Gene Hackman's original Digger can't be topped.
this makes me think of the time nobody at open ai understood how to use a grill. nitter.gq/yaroslavvb/status/2026…
"Most domains are fundamentally pretty shallow," says @RyanGreenblatt. A concise statement of what the superintelligence worldview gets wrong, IMO. My view is the opposite: many domains are surprisingly deep, and AI won't be able to "quickly pick up a bunch of domains."
I think one possible optimistic reading of AI doomsaying is to look at media commentary on social media. Around 2015-2020, media CW was the social media was the source of all of society's ills. It is indeed bad - but probably not that bad.
It did, however, basically ruin and/or kill the media. So it's natural that the people whose jobs were being destroyed or degraded would catastrophize about social media.
