Thank you @ChiOnwurah it is a terrible blight on the centre of Newcastle in the middle of a housing & cost of living crisis.
Leaseholders in #Newcastle can face supposed charities like the Mary Magdalene & Holy Jesus Trust who refuse to extend leaseholds; or extortionate Building Management, Fire Safety & Ground Rent Fees yet the Govt's Leasehold Reform Bill won't help them. I asked the Govt - why not?

🦺 More residents forced out of their homes in Canning Town after structural defects were uncovered during building safety case preparation. They’re being told to pay for alternative accommodation themselves. How is this acceptable, @mhclg? standard.co.uk/news/london/e…

Just over a week ago, I was contacted by a group of worried leaseholders who have been left without heating and hot water in their homes. They were being forced to shower in these portable cubicles. I’ve been looking at the situation which appears to involve a freeholder who owns multiple blocks of flats in London Read more @theipaper inews.co.uk/news/leasehold-f…

The Remediation Bill’s Second Reading offered a glimmer of hope. But there is much, much more to do. “Fix first and fast” must become MHCLG’s mantra. Only then can @UKLabour say no building and no resident is left behind. Read more ⬇️ endourcladdingscandal.org/po…

Some welcome news from @AngelaRayner today. Funding will be made available for collectively owned buildings, and a Govt amendment will be tabled to extend leaseholder protections from 3 to 6 properties. Positive steps we've long called for. We look forward to seeing the detail.

🆕 Minister @mtpennycook has set out his plans for shared ownership. The problem? It’s a plan to sell more shared ownership homes, not to help existing shared owners. 🖇️ Link in next post

Replying to @paullewismoney
Hi Paul, sadly September RPI is used to increase tens of thousands of shared owners’ rents. For most, the increase is September RPI + 0.5% and set in the lease. Social landlords could change the formula to CPI + 1%, but funnily enough they’re not willing to do that.

Any of my leasehold/cladding followers know anyone who’s sold flat at a loss recently who’d be willing to talk - for today’s BBC News coverage of falling house prices - we want to illustrate that that’s mainly due to plummeting flat prices caused by leasehold/building safety.

Grenfell - 72 died from the fire, at least five died by suicide, 11,000 have PTSD, concerns about long term effects of toxicity on residents, 11 firefighters with terminal cancer - plus £1bn spent and rising. That's 'nothing' right?
Cutting red tape costs taxpayers nothing. It’s a common sense solution to get Britain building.

Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith has told the Tory conference that he would "scrap unnecessary net-zero housing red tape" and cut the cost of "delivering and therefore buying a new home by up to £50,000." How would the Tories guarantee that developers pass on these supposed savings to homebuyers? And what about those new-build buyers who want solar panels and heat pumps and lower energy bills? Could cutting the requirement for building them in mean any savings just translated into higher bills for the homeowner?

#Grenfell was 9 years ago. Behind these failed numbers delivered by members of @HomeBuildersFed to fix unsafe homes, there are families trapped and financially stressed. Every building has a number of sad and preventable stories. @EOCS_Official @AngelaRayner @andyburnham @mhclg
The message is clear: building more homes has been prioritised over making existing homes safe. Despite the missed targets, self-reported data and years of delay, there is still no meaningful change in @mhclg's approach. Warm words. Weak oversight. Unsafe homes.
