Education is so important to me. 🎓It’s extremely sad that as our year is coming to an end to learn that provincial education departments have said that due to severe budget shortfalls, they have had to halt or defer dozens of planned school facilities (hundreds in some provinces). 🚧
Basic Education has said there is a national infrastructure deficit of around R120bn. Mr. Godongwana… maybe some of those SOE bailouts over 15 years totalling around R521bn could have gone to that? 🤷♂️ Overcrowding in township schools has reached a breaking point, with some classrooms trying to accommodate over 60 learners! Madness! 😮

Imagine if Home Affairs is hacked! 🏢💻
Probability? 🤔
I think so.
Ahead of the Department of Home Affairs launching its automated online asylum-registration platform in a few days (10 November), our Minister Leon Schreiber has addressed parliamentary concerns regarding system integrity. 🛡️📅
He knows, we all know (or should know), hackers are increasingly targeting state biometric databases, prompting Home Affairs to implement enhanced information security layers. 🔒🛡️

Other than election news, another major ‘influence’ 🎯 has to be the news about the US taking steps to terminate our beloved South Africa 🇿🇦 from the AGOA Preferential Trade, which is something I predicted in my 2026-2027 future thinking book! 📖✨
ANYWAY.. of course, since that announcement by Mr Trump, things have changed, and a percentage of "America" is also trying to constrain or oust Trump via the midterms and what follows in Congress.
The ponder. If Trump is booted, will the USA keep South Africa in?
There are so many scenarios to consider!
What businesses will this impact in South Africa and how will that affect the man on the street? How will this impact the bigger AGOA bloc?
And so many more questions!
The most important question is however “How should South Africa best respond and turn this lemon into lemonade?”
Yesterday, I asked my industry colleague Chantell Ilbury for some insights, so I hope to be able to share those with you all soon. Chantell is, of course, a leading scenario planner and one of the first people we should consult about such matters. As I do.
However, while we wait on her, I thought you might like a few insights from myself, through the lens of a Business and Environmental Technologist, and here they are!
The bottom line is AGOA is only 10% of South Africa's US exports by value in 2025 (~US$1.7bn, down from ~$4bn / 28% in 2024), but the hartseer is concentrated as follows:
• Autos & components — historically the bulk of AGOA use; factories, suppliers, logistics.
• Citrus (especially Western & Northern Cape) — US is ~5–6% of volume but a high-value window; farm and packhouse jobs cluster hard.
• Wine, macadamias (which I love – and also a client of mine), some apparel/light manufacturing. COSATU’s working range is roughly 3000–10000 jobs at risk if preferences fall away and buyers don’t absorb the new duty stack (MFN + existing additional US tariffs, including the ~12.5% layer on some lines, where they apply). National totals look “small”, but towns that live on citrus or a plant line feel it as a crisis, as if we need another crisis to add to our list of crises!
For the man (and woman, and otherwise identifying) on the street, we won’t see a sudden supermarket shock. What we will feel: fewer seasonal farm shifts, slower overtime in auto towns, municipalities under more pressure, rand noise when markets price political risk, and another story that “the world is shutting doors.” Indirectly, it feeds food insecurity, youth unemployment, and the sense that South Africa’s brand abroad is contested. The street pays for elite geopolitics in delayed hire notices, not in a headline tariff.
Now, let me poke the bear. If Trump is “ousted” — does America then double back and keep South Africa in? Three possible scenarios I can personally imagine:
1. Trump stays/hard line holds — exit sticks unless Pretoria makes concrete, visible concessions (which, in my view, they are unlikely to) the White House can sell as a win.
2. Leadership change in Washington — AGOA is statute + eligibility criteria, not one man’s mood. A new administration can reinstate faster, but it won’t reverse overnight without a bilateral reset and Congress still watching Africa policy.
3. Muddy middle — South Africa stays out of AGOA but negotiates a narrower sector deal (citrus, autos, critical minerals/isotopes) because US buyers and 600+ US firms in South Africa (~135000 jobs) also lose when preferences die. Remember, we're not forbidden from trading with the USA… it's just a little more costly for parties involved.
You should now be asking… what are the chances of Trump being booted? Good question. My best guess (prediction-market ballpark as of early November 2026 — don’t hold me to it):
• Impeached (House charges): ~75–85% before the end of the term – a risk I also flagged in my book.
• Impeached and removed (needs 2/3 Senate): ~28%
• 25th Amendment removal before 2027: ~3–5%
• 25th Amendment used sometime before Jan 2029: ~30%
Don’t hold me to the above … but now you have my opinion in writing. To use or not to use?
As for the bigger AGOA bloc, removing Africa’s largest AGOA beneficiary signals that eligibility is now geopolitical, not just technical. Smaller exporters watch and hedge. Regional value chains that used South Africa as a hub to the US get riskier. The bloc’s credibility as a development tool weakens if “rules-based preference” feels like a loyalty test. Other African states may race for bilateral quiet deals rather than a collective AGOA renewal story. AGOA will forever more be beneficial for those who buddy with the bully.
Turning the lemon into lemonade (JPMK’s playbook):
1. Don’t romanticise AGOA — treat it as a bonus, a cherry on a cupcake, not a business model. 89% of South Africa→US trade already moves on ordinary WTO MFN terms. Compete on quality, reliability, and speed, not only on zero duty.
2. Diversify destinations hard — EU, UK, Middle East, India, ASEAN, AfCFTA depth. Citrus and wine already know this muscle; autos need the same discipline.
3. Sell what America still needs — critical minerals (South Africa supplies a chunk of the US “critical 50”), medical isotopes (~70% of some US cancer-treatment isotopes), and US-linked auto/boat value chains. Frame partnership as mutual dependency, not charity.
4. Negotiate like adults — fix the solvable bits (ag market access, IP, investment protection) without trading away sovereignty theatre that Washington won’t buy anyway. Get wins that can be announced in both capitals.
5. SME and farm resilience — targeted bridging finance, market-entry grants to non-US buyers, and skills so a lost US order doesn’t mean a lost season.
6. Narrative flip — South Africa as the reliable southern-hemisphere supplier that de-risks US and global food/auto/minerals chains. Preferential access was the old story; strategic indispensability is the new one.
7. Scenario planning as culture — every exporter should already have an “AGOA off/AGOA on/sector deal” matrix for 2027. The ones who survive this decade treat geopolitics as a line item, not a surprise. And if you need help scenario planning, reach out right away to scenarioplanners.co.za
Thank you kindly.

Our major telcos have united against biometric SIM rules 📶
What rules? 🤔
They have said they oppose ICASA’s strict biometric SIM card rules as currently drafted.
Our network operators are pushing back against the draft mandate to capture fingerprint (or face) data for consumer verification. Imagine the effort for us customers! 🖐️📲 But would it be a worthwhile trade-off for security? 🔐 Probably...

It’s official! What?
... The UN Environment Programme has confirmed our planet will overshoot the 1.5°C warming target set by the Paris Agreement. 🌍
🔥 I’ve always said it was inevitable.
Yesterday, two new reports from the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative, one produced with UNEP, warned that this overshoot will cause large and often irreversible damage to Earth’s ice: permafrost thaw, sea ice and glacier loss, and rising seas. 🧊
The good news is that how much damage we lock in still depends on how quickly we cut emissions and bring temperatures back down... so we must intensify our pressure on the fossil fuel industry!

Yesterday, the South African Human Rights Commission finally released a 171-page report 📄🇿🇦 on the shenanigans related to water in Jozi 🏗️ One nugget that stood out for me is that Tshwane's spending on outsourced water tankers jumped from about R47 million in 2021/22 to R777 million in 2024/25, then dropped to about R362 million in 2025/26. The Commission says this "requires particular attention" and stresses the need for proper procurement controls… dirrr

What can take down a President?
🏛️ Well… their website.
💻 Let me tell you.
Cyber authorities around the world issued urgent alerts this week as hackers began their shenanigans by exploiting critical, newly discovered vulnerabilities affecting roughly 70% of the world’s web infrastructure. 70% !!! Can you imagine that! 😱
So what happened? 🤔
PHP2Shell happened! 🧨 The threat centres on two severe bugs hidden inside PHP’s core memory-handling architecture. Because popular content management systems like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and Magento rely on PHP, a massive portion of global web infrastructure was put at risk. ⚠️ By exploiting how PHP handles memory limits during certain operations, such as a corrupted file-upload process, an e-attacker can inject malicious code directly into a server’s memory, bypass logins and gain access to a system command shell. 🔓
What makes this situation historic for us all is how the flaws were discovered. 🧠 Cybersecurity research firms, including Calif and Wiz, used advanced artificial intelligence models, such as OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol, to scan decades-old open-source code. 🤖 The AI agents chained together complex memory bugs that had gone unnoticed for more than 20 years. ⏳
How did humans respond?
🛡️ To protect sensitive data and prevent automated ransomware campaigns, government agencies, infrastructure operators and businesses around the world took their websites offline as a precaution while they applied fixes. Reported disruptions included: • Government portals: Parts of government web systems in France, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sri Lanka and the UK temporarily went offline. 🌍 • Public services: The Port of Rotterdam, along with various transport, financial and city portals, suspended digital services. 🚢 • Online knowledge resources: Wikipedia and the Internet Archive experienced temporary, planned precautionary downtime. 📚 • And yes, this is why our own Presidency website was deliberately taken offline as a direct precautionary response to the PHP2Shell vulnerabilities. 🤐
🛠️ What’s being done now?
The PHP Foundation released emergency patches. 🩹 Major cybersecurity authorities, including the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the NSA and Europe’s ENISA, issued urgent guidance for system administrators to update their servers. 📋
If you’re an everyday internet user, there’s no need to panic. Simply visiting a website running a vulnerable version of PHP will not compromise your computer or phone. 📱 Website administrators are responsible for updating their server software to PHP versions 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35 to address the vulnerabilities. ✅

🌍 Ongoing #Trend link between two 'things'.
It's fascinating and extremely sad how 'mechanisms' of war are so closely linked to the fossil fuel industry. Another recent example I have to share is Algeria, which has just approved its first overseas military deployment in 53 years!!! Why? To safeguard its $13-billion trans-Saharan energy interests in Russia-backed Niger.
🇩🇿 For over half a century, Algeria has maintained a strict, constitutional non-interventionist doctrine, declining to send its forces across its borders. The last time Algerian did so was during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War .. guess what that was about, no need, that war, also know as the Yom Kippur War, had significant links to fossil fuels too!
🔍 So what is Algeria Safeguarding?
Well, I can tell you now, it's not the environment... it's...
🌐 The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP). A massive, multi-billion-dollar project designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria, through Niger, and into Algeria, where it can be piped directly into European markets. And 🛢️ the Kafra Oil Fields. Algeria's state-owned energy giant, Sonatrach, holds a production-sharing agreement to explore and drill in northern Niger's Kafra region, which holds an estimated hundreds of millions of barrels of crude oil.

Today I have an🌍 Eco Alert for South Africans! 🇿🇦 .. This warning comes from the first-ever global assessment of coral reefs under the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems, released in late October 2026.
🔍 So what's Happening?
The main culprit is climate-driven heat stress, particularly marine heatwaves.
🐠 The Bleaching Cycle.
When water temperatures rise too high, corals expel the colourful algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues. This turns the coral white (bleaches) and leaves it starving. How sad is that …
🕒 Lack of Recovery Time.
Reefs historically recovered over several years. Now, frequent marine heatwaves are killing corals before they can heal.
🌿 Local Aggravators.
Ocean warming is the main threat, but overfishing, coastal development, ocean acidification, and pollution weaken reefs further.
🏖️ Impact on Us:
🔗 1. Decimation of Marine Life:
Reefs support 25% to 30% of marine life, acting as nurseries and shelters. Their collapse could drive many species to extinction. #SaveOurOceans #marinelife
🍽️ 2. Threat to Global Food Security:
Over half a billion people rely on coral reefs. Their loss could cause local fisheries to collapse, leading to food shortages. #FoodSecurity #protectourreefs
🏝️ 3. Loss of Natural Coastal Defence:
Coral reefs absorb up to 97% of wave energy, protecting shorelines. Without them, there's increased erosion and storm damage. #CoastalProtection #climatechange
💔 4. Economic Ruination for Coastal Nations:
Reefs generate billions through tourism and fishing. Their decline could devastate local economies dependent on these industries.
#TourismImpact #EconomicCrisis
South Africa has two beautiful coastlines with tremendous biodiversity. Each country has to play a part in protecting our oceans, because it does affect us on land! If we don’t work together, in a few decades, this problem is going to become a crisis. Let's work together Future Thinkers to protect our precious reefs and oceans! … and the way to do this –resist the future use of fossil fuels and carbon intensive services and products.

🌱🚽 Ewwy Wastewater to Green Fuel! 🌍🚀
… here in Mzansi!
In what could be a win for our circular economy (an economy we need to grow quick stix!), Climate Investor THREE has backed a project at the Sebokeng Wastewater Treatment Works in Gauteng to process raw municipal sewage sludge into green methanol! 💧➡️⛽
(What is green methanol? Think of it as an eco-friendly liquid fuel that acts like a recycle bin for carbon pollution).
Back onto the crux of this post.
This is what R65.8 million from THREE might help is with and why this project could be a #greenflag for all.
It could process 90k tonnes of sewage sludge annually to yield 14.3k tonnes of green methanol for eco-friendly marine fuel and green plastics. 🛳️🍃
The Treatment plant is meant to feature an onsite 10 MW electrolyser backed by a massive 50 MW solar plant. ☀️💨
If realized, it’s projected to help us avoid nearly 119k tonnes of CO₂ emissions every single year. 📉🌍
And finally, it could boost the Vaals economy! The project can create 300 localized construction jobs and 60 permanent operational roles. 👷♀️
🇿🇦 Lets hope the money stays in the taps if you know what I mean.
