❄️ Enjoying the first and, hopefully, not the last, snow of this winter ❄️

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? This study brings us closer to the fundamental understanding of the infection process. 8/9

𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 Actin filaments observed at membrane protrusions, along with actin polymerisation inhibition results suggest cellular actin can drive endosome rupture. 7/9

On the contrary, inhibition of endosome acidification didn’t stop genome-containing particles from exiting the endosomes. 6/9

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱? 🦠 Inhibition of the actin polymerisation led to genome release within the endosomes, hindering the virus replication. 5/9

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁? Using advanced #cryoET @cemcof to visualise cell entry of rhinovirus 2, echovirus 18, echovirus 30, and enterovirus 71 – right in action! 🔎 4/9

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 This study reveals that enterovirus-containing #endosomes can deform and rupture, enabling the release of genome-containing particles into the cytoplasm. 3/9

#Enteroviruses, members of the Picornaviridae family, cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to encephalitis 😷 However, the infection process was never observed 𝘪𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘰 - until now. 2/9

✨𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧✨ We are happy to announce that the paper by Aygul Ishemgulova @IshemgulovaA and members of our group, describing the novel mechanism of cell invasion by enteroviruses is now published in @CommsBio! 🦠 Let’s break it down! 🧵 1/9
