From 6 April 2027, Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax will become mandatory for more sole traders and landlords, as the qualifying income threshold reduces from £50,000 to £30,000. This will be based on the qualifying income reported on their 2025/26 Self Assessment tax return.
The expansion follows the initial introduction of MTD for Income Tax on 6 April 2026, which applies to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, based on their 2024/25 tax return.
Amber’s blog has been updated to reflect the upcoming changes in April 2027, highlighting why it’s important to start preparing now and outlining the next steps to take if you’re affected. Check it out here > eu1.hubs.ly/H0zl5DZ0

How do you value a business as part of matrimonial proceedings?
When a privately owned or owner-managed business forms part of a matrimonial dispute, establishing its value can be an important part of understanding the financial position of both parties.
But it’s not simply about arriving at a figure. The valuation needs to be independent, well-supported and clearly explained, with the ability to withstand Court scrutiny where required.
Plus Accounting was instructed to independently value an established owner-managed company and consider the potential tax implications for its two shareholders if their shares were hypothetically sold.
In our latest case study, Ed explains our approach to the valuation and tax analysis, and how we produced a robust report suitable for Court proceedings > eu1.hubs.ly/H0zgv9Y0

From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be included in the calculation of an individual’s estate for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes. If you have built up substantial pension savings, the changes could affect how much of your wealth you can pass on to your family.
For many people, pensions have been an important part of both retirement planning and passing wealth to the next generation. However, the new rules mean it may be time to review how your pension fits into your wider financial and estate planning arrangements.
In this new article, our Senior Tax Manager, Louise Parker explains what’s changing, who could be affected and what you may want to consider before April 2027. Check it out here > eu1.hubs.ly/H0zgv6L0

🎨 Paint, Sip and Support for Amaze Sussex!
Yesterday, the Plus Accounting team came together for a special Paint & Sip event in support of local charity @AmazeSussex. Inspired by The Story Trail, which Plus Accounting is proud to sponsor, the event saw team members put their creative skills to the test by designing and painting their very own miniature BookBench sculptures.
With so many brilliant and completely different designs, competition was high, especially with a prize up for grabs!
Once the time was up, Vicky King had the difficult task of selecting a winner from the impressive collection of designs. It was a tough decision but after much consideration, Maria Thomas was crowned the winner, taking home a sardine themed medal and goodies as well as her BookBench creation!
Most importantly, the event helped raise funds for Amaze Sussex, with proceeds from each miniature BookBench paint kit going directly to the charity to help support the fantastic work they do.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the event such an enjoyable occasion!

💡 Another brilliant Brighton Summit!
Last week, Vicky King headed to the Brighton Dome for Brighton Summit: Think Differently, joining businesses from across the city for a packed day of fresh ideas, inspiring conversations and new connections.
Vicky also lent a hand to the @BrightonChamber team with speaker sign-in before making the most of everything the Summit had to offer.
From thought-provoking talks and interactive workshops to catching up with familiar faces and meeting plenty of new ones, it was a great opportunity to step away from the day-to-day and think a little differently.
It was great to see so many of you there! 👋

Growing sales and money in the bank can be encouraging signs, but they don’t necessarily give you the full picture. Turnover, profit and cash flow each reveal something different about the financial health and performance of your business.
A business can be growing its sales but seeing margins fall. It can be profitable on paper but struggling for cash. And a healthy bank balance doesn’t always mean that money is available to spend.
Understanding the difference can help you make better decisions around pricing, recruitment, investment and future growth.

Looking to reward and retain key employees?
An Enterprise Management Incentive (EMI) scheme can offer qualifying businesses a tax-efficient way to give employees a stake in the company’s future.
However setting up an EMI scheme involves more than simply deciding how many options to grant. From checking company and employee eligibility to agreeing valuations, setting vesting and exercise conditions, and meeting HMRC requirements, there are several important steps to get right.
Our latest blog takes you through the process of setting up an EMI scheme, including the key eligibility criteria, how options can be structured and what businesses need to consider before granting them > eu1.hubs.ly/H0z4KgR0

Now in its third year, the overall score stands at 1–1, so there’s everything to play for!

Pensions and Inheritance Tax: changes are coming from April 2027
From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and lump sum death benefits are set to be brought within the scope of Inheritance Tax, changing the role pensions can play in estate planning.
For those affected, this could mean reviewing pension nominations, wills and wider estate plans, as well as considering how assets are passed on to family and other beneficiaries and the potential Inheritance Tax exposure across your pension and wider estate.
Existing plans that were structured around pensions sitting outside the estate may therefore need to be reconsidered ahead of the new rules.
Our latest Spotlight explains what’s changing, the potential planning implications and the key points to consider > eu1.hubs.ly/H0z4K7_0
