Characteristics of *actual* banned books: - Amazon refuses to sell bc it violates their “offensive content policy” - online forums discussing it are filled with ‘we need to do something’ anons (FBI) - people will fly around the world to murder you for translating it

Tbf, paying a boatload for projects truly is part of the “historic character of the building”
I reached out to the NYS Office of General Services about the railings. They’re going up on the Senate and Assembly staircases, but NOT the Million Dollar Staircase. OGS cites safety reasons for installing them. Total cost: $700,000

I see a lot of people describing Social Security benefit cuts as "changing the bargain," but this is wrong. The rules that have been in place for decades explicitly require that benefits be cut to a level that can be paid with SS tax revenues once the trust fund runs out. The retirees calling for taxes to be raised above the tax rate that they paid on their own wages in order to avoid the legally mandated cuts are the ones trying to change the bargain for their own benefit.
Well, if you wanna change the bargain because it’s to your benefit, then I don’t think I’m going to feel very guilty about using my power to not let you do that. I don’t see you or your generation not wanting what security Social Security provides. When I see them is not wanting to pay their share of it, which means paying the previous generation. That doesn’t sound like a very good deal to me so we’re not going to do that. I am willing to listen to ideas that don’t involve me getting screwed and no one else.

The claim that "property taxes mean you don't own your own home" has become ubiquitous in some conservative circles. The argument has been wildly successful despite being obviously incorrect. Me in @politico:

And don’t forget the original “Middle Class STAR” proptax rebate checks of 2008. A top priority of Senate Republicans, timed to hit mailboxes shortly before an election that produced … NY’s first Democratic state Senate majority in 42 years.
Replying to @PolicyEngineer
Pre-election rebate checks are an old, awful Albany tradition. From 1998, 2014 and 2026:

It is, in fact, entirely classless.
There is no right wing victory in using “retard” as a slur.

Mamdani's two supposedly more moderate checkers and balancers -- Levine and Menin -- have determined to counteract Mamdani's call for tax hikes by ... calling for tax hikes.
NYC spent more than it took in for four years in a row. The current budget was "balanced" amid an economic expansion only by postponing over $2B in pension payments. This is not a problem stemming from NY's taxes being too low.

“If Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, and New Jersey don’t opt in to the program, New York will gladly take their donations and spend them on our neediest students.” My latest for @CityJournal on NY decision to opt in to the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program.
NEW: Kathy Hochul just chose kids over the teachers' unions. Teachers' unions waged a fierce campaign to keep New York out of the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program, which allows people to make tax-deductible contributions that will go to scholarships for New York students. Hochul’s announcement makes New York the 31st state to opt in. She is the second Democratic governor to do so. Hochul deserves credit for holding firm against teachers' unions and their allies. We should hope other blue-state governors will demonstrate the same courage. Via @dany_egorov city-journal.org/article/fed…

It's official, the federal budget deficit is $2 trillion and growing. And in the middle of an expansion, not a recession. If entitlement spending does not drastically slow down, we are soon headed to a debt crisis. What does it mean? Higher interest rates and lower growth.
The federal budget deficit totaled $2.0 trillion in fiscal year 2026, the Congressional Budget Office estimates, $218 billion more than the deficit recorded in fiscal year 2025. cbo.gov/publication/61985
