Citybus x PolyU: Smarter Training for Safer Bus Journeys 🛣️ Bus Captains safeguard over a million customers daily, and their precise response to unexpected road conditions ensures every safe journey. 🚌 Citybus and PolyU have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), witnessed by Prof. Xiaowen Fu, Head of the PolyU Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) and Chair Professor of Logistics Engineering, and Ms Rebecca Chan, Administrative Director of Citybus. Citybus will utilise PolyU's "Intelligent Driving Training and Evaluation System", funded by the Smart Traffic Fund, to enhance training effectiveness and road safety. The System integrates Extended Reality (XR) technology, AI-driven analysis, and a "six-degree-of-freedom" motion simulation platform. Bus Captains can repeatedly practise handling emergency situations in a zero-risk, realistic environment, reinforcing responses and building muscle memory through data analysis.🚦 Officially commenced this July, the pilot scheme is trialling on the existing platform. Should results prove positive, both parties will explore adapting the system to the operational characteristics of buses, translating research outcomes into real-world applications. Powering Next-Gen AI Chips with Quantum-Tunnelling Transistors 💡 Conventional microchips have long been constrained by the "Boltzmann tyranny" — a fundamental physical barrier that caps energy efficiency and holds back high-performance computing. To break through this bottleneck, a research team led by Prof. Jianhua HAO, Head of the Department of Physics and Materials, Chair Professor of Materials Physics and Devices and Associate Director of PolyU-Wuhan Technology and Innovation Research Institute at PolyU — in collaboration with researchers from the National University of Singapore, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Peking University, and the Singapore University of Technology and Design — has engineered a novel quantum-tunnelling field-effect transistor (TFET) using 2D nanomaterials. The landmark findings are now published in the prestigious international scientific journal "Science". 🔬 By replacing thermionic emission with quantum tunnelling, the device drastically cuts switching voltage while overcoming the low-current limitations of earlier TFET designs. Crucially, the team used pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to demonstrate compatibility with standard silicon fabrication, paving the way for the commercial scale-up of ultra-low-power AI chips. Through cross-institutional collaboration, PolyU continues to pioneer semiconductor innovation, offering a scalable blueprint for the future of global microelectronics. 🌐 Learn more in the comments below! #PolyU #PolyUResearch #Semiconductors #TFET #AIChips
