THE PHENOMENON OF CONVERGENCE
Living to our potential is innate: to become fully human, wise, and to discover and live our unique talents for our benefit and others'. Wisdom includes working with life’s rhythmic reality instead of resenting or fighting it. We seek timeless truths, nature’s laws and patterns, and listen to our conscience and soul instead of letting others with unknown motives design what we believe and how we act.
Seemingly random events profoundly affect us. Few can explain how and why their lives unfolded as they did. Most attribute inexplicable events to luck—good, bad, or both. The wisest recognize that nature has a natural order, timing, structure, and direction we cannot control but can understand and cooperate with, rather than resist or assume randomness. Observing and utilizing the natural phenomenon of convergence is an example.
Imagine river tributaries converging to form a larger river. Water volume and speed accelerate and become turbulent rapids until a larger, calmer river emerges. The pattern repeats downstream until the rivers reach and converge with the sea. Convergence similarly shapes humanity and our individual lives. Converging change forces and new technologies create periods of accelerated change, as in the European Renaissance, three prior Industrial Revolutions, and the current New Reality.
Change is constant, but the New Reality’s technology-driven, life-altering rate and range of change and unpredictability are unprecedented in their effect on how we learn, work, live, and evolve. Two complementary forces of change have existed since humanity’s origins. Innovation accelerates change, efficiency, and complexity, while democratization spreads innovation into everyday life. Unique to the mid-21st-century New Reality are declining birth rates and longer lifespans; shrinking distance, cultural and language barriers; and the personal choice to use artificial intelligence to advance or degrade our lives.
Many people fear change, ignore or deny it, or judge it incomprehensible. They focus on what entertains them or they perceive (usually incorrectly) as controllable. Life becomes fearful, frantic, cataclysmic, siloed, disconnecting actions from purpose, pain from growth, humanity from animal instincts. and conflict from adaptation. History shows that fear and denial lead to an inability to adapt and unnecessary suffering.
Convergence demonstrates life’s interconnectedness and provides valuable, practical insight. What appears random reveals an order, opportunity, and timing for wise choices. A prepared mind encounters an unexpected teacher. A personal crisis sparks undiscovered resilience. Certain people become messengers with timely lessons. Tension between opposing choices catalyzes a breakthrough. Hidden meaning is revealed when connected to another event and a larger pattern.
Utilizing convergence is a conscious practice of the wisest, most creative people, including business leaders, scientists, artists, and storytellers. They value random thoughts or inspirations before the full design is revealed. Collecting and connecting multiple inspirations leads to patterns, useful ideas, and actions. Ego-driven dismissals of inspiration and impatience for premature decisions and actions are easily ignored.
Convergence informs pragmatic optimism for life, change, and intuition’s unique human value in aligning with emerging reality. Appreciating convergence makes us less reactive and more discerning, patient and prepared. Convergence is not something that happens around us; it is another path to potential.

I have loved everything about my life. But among its greatest privileges has been watching three extraordinary people—my children—grow up, find their own path to potential, wisdom, and happiness, marry someone they love and who loves them, and bless me with eight more extraordinary people, my grandchildren, who in turn do the same.
Every decision as a young father, every late night balancing law school with a heavy executive workload, and every decision was based on the belief that love’s highest expression is helping those we love to discover themselves, life’s reality, and how to make the wisest possible decisions. That is the heart of The Potentialist.
I didn’t write The Potentialist series to be abstract about what our potential and wisdom are or how to achieve them. I did my best to write them in the most straightforward language possible for my children and my grandchildren, and then for others seeking the path to become their best, their wisest. I wanted anyone willing to read or listen to visualize the turbulent, opportunity-rich decades ahead not as a threat, but as the most expansive canvas humanity has ever been given upon which to leave their mark. I wanted them to know in their heart that potential is not an obscure, undefinable prize for the elite, but an undiscovered craving and joy sitting semi-dormant inside everyone waiting to be claimed through deliberate practice and daily pursuit. The effort and focus is rewarded by becoming the best human we can be and making the wisest possible decisions that serve ourselves, those we love, the people we touch, and the world at large.
Passionately loving my children and grandchildren and those they love clarified life’s most important work not as societally defined success, but as becoming someone others can emulate: responsible, loving, calm when others panic, fun-loving, mostly gentle but strong and decisive when needed. If I did that job well, my children and grandchildren would learn and apply it in their own unique way, more capable of living well and leaving their own distinct mark on the people they love and the world. All are doing that today, and what joy it gives me!
I’m fond of the metaphor of a rock hitting a pond and the waves rippling outward as a measure of life. If I’ve done my job and lived my life well, my rock is not one, but many. The spirit of this effect, watching it work over decades as it is intended, where one life influences many, and those many influence multitudes, is why I keep writing, speaking, and explaining what the heck the New Reality is about. What humans have been can be vastly exceeded if only a few will disavow the ego that limits them and choose their heart instead to guide them to become their best and wisest, always towards the bright light ahead. Do it not just for yourself, but for the many.
Be a Potentialist. Start with the people you love most.

Understanding and cooperating with natural law transforms how we make decisions, view relationships, and the world itself. When we learn to recognize the patterns that govern life, we make choices with greater clarity, speed, and wisdom—over time, cultivating purpose, resilience, and integrity.

I’ve always believed people are capable of more than they realize. The challenge is listening to that inner voice, following it, and continuing to become the best version of yourself.
You may not reach every goal exactly as you imagined, but a life spent pursuing your potential is still a life well lived.
I appreciated the opportunity to discuss this on the What’s Your Story podcast. It’s also how I see Arizona. Our greatest resource is the potential of our people, and government should clear the path so they can pursue it.

Happy 250th Birthday, America
On this 250th Fourth of July, my heart is full thinking about the long, unfinished journey that began with a simple, world-changing idea: that all people are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights.
A quarter of a millennium later, we gather in backyards and on town greens, under fireworks and around kitchen tables, to celebrate not only our independence, but our enduring promise to one another.
We honor the courage of those who dared to imagine the potential that lied within a free nation, the hands that built it, the voices that expanded its circle of belonging, and the hearts that kept faith when the path was steep and unsteady. Our story has never been perfect, but it has always been propelled by people willing to show up: neighbors helping neighbors, service members standing watch, teachers lighting minds, first responders running toward danger, and voters believing their voice matters.
As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we also celebrate something timeless: the wisdom that guided our founders and the potential they entrusted to every generation that would follow. Their greatest gift was not simply a new nation, but the belief that free people, drawing upon wisdom, character, and courage, could continually shape a better future. That is the enduring promise of America—that our greatest potential is realized when we learn from the past while boldly creating what comes next.
May this anniversary renew our commitment to the work that freedom asks of us: to listen more deeply, debate more honestly, and care more fiercely. May we pass to the next generation not just our symbols, but our substance—our humanity, our courage, our wisdom, and our unwavering belief in human potential.
Here's to the American experiment at 250: resilient, self-correcting, and still reaching. May the sparks in tonight's sky remind us not only of the light that has guided our nation for 250 years, but of the light of wisdom and potential that each of us carries to help shape our shared future in this New Reality.
Happy Independence Day—and Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🇺🇸
Success is a personal, private amalgamation of thoughts, feelings, emotions, and deeply held values. Like a broth, it combines complex ingredients to create a distinct taste. It emerges as a state or experience of fulfillment, completeness, and satisfaction. For this reason, societal definitions of success, or those of other people such as parents, can never be wholly accurate or satisfying.
Allowing other people to define your success is unwise in several respects. To begin with, they are generalizations rather than applicable to the unique mix of values, interests, talents, and passions that define you and your potential. Second, contemporary definitions of success are external measures – other people’s interpretations of success – you may achieve them but find them unsatisfying.
Only you will know when your definition of success has been realized. It is an internal, wholly personal experience. It is a feeling that arises on its own and cannot be made to happen or fit anyone’s definition except your own.

"Happy Father’s Day to the OG, Ben Lytle. This is one of my most cherished candids taken when we were building our first healthcare company together (Axia/Silversneakers back in 2004). Business, healthcare, faith, family, and community are our passions in the Lytle family. My brother Larry and I are blessed to have a true Renaissance man that we call Dad."
Imagine a world in which most people make wiser decisions throughout their lives. Since most of humanity's problems stem from unwise decisions, what a better world it could be.
But what is wisdom?
Wisdom is simply the art of living well.
But how do we live well?
We make the wisest possible decisions throughout life because our decisions define us, our effect on others, and the world.
Wisdom is not a rare quality, reserved for the highly educated, elderly, or privileged. Anyone can learn to make wiser decisions by following two parallel paths.
On one path, we devote a few minutes daily to expanding our ability or capacity to be wise, instead of only addressing daily tasks. We observe, study, and reflect on ourselves, our situations, and life's purpose and meaning. As we do, new skills emerge that are honed throughout our lives.
We develop perspective by rising above the daily grind for a bird's-eye view of entire situations instead of a fragment. Then we look back to how we arrived, and forward to where our decisions and actions will take us. We learn to see reality through careful examination instead of a fleeting glance, because what appears real is often distorted by our ego, society, or technology. We discern by unleashing our curiosity and determination to delve deeply, instead of skimming the surface of complex issues.
As we develop the capacity for wisdom, we discover the second path, where we become strong enough to be free of our ego, biases, destructive emotions, and instincts, unlocking our innate potential to make wise decisions in the moment.
Do you believe that you and most people can become wise, and make better decisions? Can wisdom become humanities norm, instead of a rarity?
We doubt our own, and humanity's ability to grow, forgetting that many such leaps lead to our present-day lives.
For centuries, it was believed that ordinary people could not be trusted to own land, learn to read, or self-govern without Kings, yet we did.
Wisdom is a modest step for humanity, compared to prior advances, but the need for wisdom has become urgent. We must independently make unprecedented, complex decisions without guidance from less reliable institutions.
For instance, "How can I integrate with Intelligent Automation to enhance my humanity rather than diminish it?"
Or, "How will I ascertain what is true, when everything I see and read might be false?"
You already possess many of the skills to develop wisdom, but today, you use them unconsciously for other purposes. You only need to learn to use them intentionally.
Although the future New Reality might require more of us, it provides the means to become wiser, easier. Instant information, accelerated learning through artificial intelligence, and tools for understanding ourselves and the world, are becoming widely available.
What's your plan for adapting to the New Reality?
Will you choose to develop the wisdom to live well?
The choice is yours.
