Never ask Rebirth fans why their game is good because they “can’t explain it”? Ask me. I played the OG in 1997 when I was 13 fucking years old. I grew up with this game. I have no problem explaining exactly why I love Remake and Rebirth. The combat is one of the best blends of real time action and traditional RPG mechanics I have ever played. Every character actually plays differently. The synergy system in Rebirth makes the entire party feel like a TEAM instead of Cloud plus 2 interchangeable party members. The party banter is out of this world, it makes the fighting feel more alive. The character development is phenomenal. Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, even Cait Sith feel like actual people because they are allowed to talk, joke, argue, be awkward, and have conversations that do not exist solely to move the plot forward. The world feels like an actual WORLD now. Places that were a handful of screens in 1997 have cultures, history, people, music, wildlife, and personality. The soundtrack takes themes I have loved since I was 13 and constantly reinvents them depending on the location, battle, mood, and character. And emotionally, there are scenes in these games that hit me substantially harder than the OG ever did because I have spent so much more time with these characters. I didn't even give a shit about Zack, until his expanded story. I love how they have now made him a major character. I can talk about the Lifestream, Sephiroth, Aerith, Cloud's fractured identity, the Whispers, the different worlds, the metaphysical stuff, the combat, the music, the characters, or the ridiculous amount of environmental storytelling for HOURS. Does that mean every decision is perfect? No. I have criticisms too. But this idea that Rebirth fans “can't explain why the game is good” is ridiculous. You just don't like the answers.

Okay, this is a WOAH moment for me. “You don’t get to rewrite my history. EVER.” Bro, you are not a martyr for Final Fantasy VII. And “YOUR history”? YOUR history? It is not your history in any way, shape, or form. You played a video game that meant a lot to you. So did millions of other people. You do not own the interpretation of it, you do not own its legacy, and disagreement with you is not somebody “rewriting your history.” That level of personal identification with a game is exactly why this whole thing has gotten so extreme. ALSO, the fact that you KEEP taking jabs at Maximilian Dood is not only childish, but completely unnecessary, especially when you keep taking him out of context. Bro, you are becoming a FANATIC yourself.

I went to see Digger knowing nothing about it except it got terrible reviews. Only went because my wife wanted to see « Emma D’Arcy » in it. We may have forgotten what is the the soul of cinema. It took me 15 minutes to be convinced I hated it. And then everything shifts. Like a fabulous allegory of the power of «narrative », a concept the movie spends an hour and half torturing in a delicious manner. Rarely a movie took me through so many different emotions, swinging like a ball in a flipper. It’s not easy to watch. It’s demanding, and that is what is formidable about it. Tom Cruise delivers an astounding performance. The best I’ve ever seen from him. One scene in particular puts him at the firmament of acting and among the greatest to do ever do it. Go watch Digger. Form your own opinion. And even if you don’t like it, you can still say that at least, you’ve seen 2hrs of true inventive CINEMA.
