Publication announcement! 🚨📚 "Sex, Lies and Statistics: Why We Need Evidence-Based Policy on Sex and Gender"
"Sex, Lies and Statistics" documents the missteps society has made by turning its back on evidence when it comes to sex and gender, and shows that accurate data is vital in providing a path to evidence-based policy.

I remember sitting in @DalgetySusan's flat as we pressed send on this email, thinking "What the hell, you don't ask....", and the phone call where she told me to LOOK AT MY EMAIL.

“Please stop adopting generalised statements of values — this inevitably encourages decision-making referring to a framework that has no relationship to the law.”
Sound advice for universities and their senior leaders from @akuareindorf KC, speaking at Edinburgh’s Conflict on Campus conference.
In CAF’s experience, it’s not uncommon to find a senior administrator or HR officer reminding an academic of the trite but true fact that freedom of speech is a “qualified right”, before proceeding, sometimes in the very same email, to assert that an alleged breach of the university's “values” takes the academic’s speech beyond the limits of what the law protects — thereby justifying anything from an admonition to “reflect on their tone or choice of words” to the launch of a disciplinary investigation.

It was great to meet @ProfAliceS at the Conflict on Campus event in Edinburgh, organised by @SimonFanshawe. Fascinating day and what a great name for a book - can't wait to read it.

Just had a meeting with the Dean of my Faculty alongside the Head of Employee Relations... Apparently I am under official investigation for writing a blog about how bad universities are at marketing. You literally couldn't make this stuff up.
If you have relevant documents, correspondence or a written account of events, we would welcome hearing from you. You may request that your identity or particular information be treated as confidential. #ArdayInvestigation
We know how sensitive this is and that people may be understandably afraid.

This has huge implications for the future of public interest investigative journalism…

No one should expect to be subjected to aggression and intimidation when giving a lecture at a university. The subject of @AdamWagner1 's lecture makes this all the more shocking.

I'm pleased to be on the panel for this important investigation.
🚨BREAKING: CAF has commissioned an independent investigation into Cambridge’s appointment of Dr Jason Arday as its youngest ever black professor, amid growing professional disquiet over his academic record, the circumstances of his appointment, the University’s handling of concerns raised about his scholarship and, more recently, the scope and direction of Cambridge’s own inquiry.
You can find out more here:
ardayinvestigation.net/
The investigation will be chaired by Professor Swaran Preet Singh, Lord Singh of Solihull, a former Commissioner of the Equality and Human Rights Commission who previously led the independent investigation into allegations of discrimination within the Conservative Party.
He will be joined by a distinguished panel comprising Harvard psychologist Professor Steven Pinker, UCL sociologist Professor Alice Sullivan, Cambridge historian Professor Robert Tombs and Labour peer Professor Maurice Glasman.
Award-winning investigative journalist Nick Wallis, whose work helped expose the Post Office Horizon scandal, will lead the investigation with a dedicated research team.
CAF has been contacted by numerous Cambridge academics who are deeply concerned that the University’s own investigation will fail to confront the wider institutional culture in which the Arday affair unfolded.
Whether these concerns are justified is for the independent investigation to determine. But Cambridge is one of the world’s oldest and greatest universities, and what happens to its academic culture has implications for higher education as a whole. So we think it’s worth going the extra mile to make sure the right questions are asked and the right lessons learned.
CAF strongly encourages current and former academics, students and other members of the University community, as well as others with relevant knowledge, to come forward with information.
This might include policy documents, internal correspondence or first-hand accounts concerning Arday’s academic record and appointment, the University’s response to concerns about his scholarship and its treatment of those who raised them, and the operation of institutional policies relating to recruitment, promotion, academic misconduct, research integrity and EDI.
Anyone wishing to contribute can contact the Investigator directly at:

(🧵) It's long been baffling to me why there has been ANY suggestion at all that NHS England or NHS Sussex only knew of concerns about the prescribing of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones by Dr Sam Hall in 2024. It's demonstrably false.
As presented at the employment tribunal Redvers Vs NHS Sussex today, former Sussex CEO Adam Doyle was personally told about a "disabled, vulnerable child" who was 16 year old, receiving hormones without the parents' knowledge in 2023. This is the same child that I call "Charlotte" in my book, Time to Think. To the best of my knowledge, this was the first time the WellBN GP practice/Dr Hall's prescribing practices were reported publicly.
I'm looking forward to speaking about the importance of trustworthy statistics at @acadofideas Battle of Ideas on Saturday at 12.15.

Reports of the death of cancel culture have been much exaggerated.
Replying to @UNSRVAW
I have been disinvited from this event by the organisers for my positions on sex, gender and prostitution so will unfortunately not be participating. 🤷🏼♀️
I’m sure it will still be worthwhile nevertheless.
Many congratulations to @ucl Prof Sallie Baxendale on being shortlisted for the Maddox Prize for standing up for science.
'Baxendale told THE that being shortlisted for the Maddox Prize “isn’t just a personal vindication” given the standing of the prize in the scientific community.
“It sends a message that scientific scrutiny is something to be encouraged, rather than feared,” she said.
“I sincerely hope this recognition gives others the confidence to speak up, challenge unsupported claims and insist that evidence remains at the heart of decision-making, particularly in the field of gender medicine, but in all areas of medicine, where assumptions and misplaced certainty can have very real consequences for people’s lives.”'
