20 years ago today, a group of 12 @UAlbanyDAES students intercepted the Spencer, SD F4 tornado. We traded our video of the storm to the local CBS station for their damage survey footage. Both videos are staggering reminders of the awesome beauty and terrible power of nature.

NOAA is reportedly on the DOGE chopping block. The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US. A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans. Again, this isn't about efficiency.

Hurricanes are more powerful than human technology. “If meteorologists could stop hurricanes, we would stop hurricanes,” says @ProfCorbosiero. “If we could control the weather, we would not want the kind of death and destruction that’s happened.” apnews.com/article/weather-c…

Lightning enveloping the eyewall is typically a signature we only see in the most powerful hurricanes.
An extraordinary amount of lightning within Hurricane Milton's eye wall this morning. Milton is now a powerful, Category 4 storm.
