We'd like COVID testing and tracing again. Also RATs. Also vaccination mandates for schools. Also freely and readily available N95 masks. And ventilation standards, incentives, and rebates.
While we cannot direct the police, we have provided the city of Ottawa everything they have asked for and will continue to provide whatever support they request.

I don't think we really understand what is happening in Ontario right now and by extension the entire country...again, do we have a government or not?

New study showing that always wearing a good mask (respirator: N95,KN95) in indoor public settings is associated with much lower odds of +Covid test. Real-world evidence confirms basic principles and lab studies. washingtonpost.com/health/20… comments from @jljcolorado and me

Just a refresher that Trump's words after white supremacists marched through Charlottesville and a counter-protester was killed: "some very fine people on both sides"

This is a great point that introduces an assumption that has yet to be tackled: Nazis and the far-right aren’t democratic so you’re not preserving democracy by legitimizing them
So they are lead by dangerous white supremacist ideologies and somehow they also have legit democratic views? Cmon man.

The Chiefs of Ontario organization is also slamming what it saw: “The actions taken during the events in Ottawa are deeply offensive,” said Regional Chief Glen Hare via press release. “Cultural appropriation of First Nations ceremonial items and protocol is colonial violence.”

In the 1st wave, we called them heroes. In the 2nd wave, we called them heroes. In the 3rd wave, we called them heroes. In the 4th wave, we allowed a small number of people to intimidate them. In the 5th wave, we are asking them to hide... #onpoli #HealthcareHero

Some university is going to put a premium on compassionate leadership, empathy, honest communication, relationship building, trust, inclusivity, and vision, and that university is going to stand out and thrive in a post-pandemic world as others race backwards to normalcy.

"I personally wear a seat belt and observe speed limits. But I can't abide the idea that state coercion should be used to FORCE people to drive less than 100 mph on residential streets. I know there may be deaths, but this is how cars work and we have to learn to live with it"

I hope this thread is mistaken, but I've been doing this too long.
🧵 @OttawaPolice seems to think this situation will magically de-escalate itself. 3 reasons why, unfortunately, I think they’re wrong. ⬇️ (Ps. I tweet about a lot of random stuff, but violent collective action & contentious politics are things I actually study!)

They also get the freedom to choose which payment to give: - vaccination - quarantine and a test - a change in career All are acceptable. Most laws and tax obligations don't give us a choice. An occupation, however, isn't an acceptable form of payment.
"Some protesters carried signs saying “Freedom isn’t free.” They’re right... getting vaccinated is the “cost” of freedom. Compared with the price paid by the Canadians commemorated at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, it’s not much of a price." theglobeandmail.com/opinion/…

Watching a lot of politicians right now make poor decisions that we assume won’t age well and worrying that they will, in fact, age just fine for them. It can happen here. It has happened here. It’s happening here now. We’re a dangerous country in a dangerous place.

Test-to-Exit Early from Isolation. It’s smart policy. The math is simple: We don’t want people ppl going back to work Infectious at day 5 just to save 3 days but then infecting 3 new people and causing 3x5 = 15 additional days of work lost for the business. It’s a net loss
1/ @CDCgov exit isolation at day 5 w/out Neg Rapid Ag Test = dangerous policy Important New Research We followed 260 Health Care Workers returning to work early • ~58% Pos on Day 6 (72% if Boosted!) • 50% w high virus load • **Positivity 2x-3x HIGHER if Boosted** A thread
