Exposure to extreme heat was found to reduce sperm quality in temperate countries. In Project HeatSafe, we analysed the associations between extreme heat and sperm quality in Singapore (a tropical country).
Here are our findings:

Extreme heat can affect pregnancy. In Project HeatSafe, we studied the risk of preterm and small-for-gestational age births from over 30,000 births in Singapore, and conducted a survey on behavioural changes during pregnancy. Here are our findings:

Economic analyses on heat stress exposure and work productivity conducted in Southeast Asia revealed that productivity during working time across various industries are expected to fall further in the next decade.

DID YOU KNOW? Elderly who take medications for their chronic conditions (e.g., high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, etc.) may be less able to regulate body temperatures in the heat

To evaluate the impact of heat stress on occupational work in Singapore, we profiled construction workers at 3 worksites in a warm month and a cool month. This effort would cumulate in an interventional study at an outdoor worksite later this year!

Climate change affects the lives of Cambodia's socially marginalized, like construction workers. @ProjectHeatSafe, with the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, study the physiological responses and perceived demands of construction workers at a worksite in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The Heat Resilience and Performance Centre (HRPC) is a globally connected research centre set to create holistic and forward-looking solutions that boost human resilience to rising temperatures.

In @ProjectHeatSafe, we monitored the environmental conditions of 19 outdoor worksites across a year. Mean maximum hourly WBGT exceeded high heat stress risk levels at all sites. It is pertinent that employers take ownership of environmental monitoring to ensure workers' safety.
In a recent collaboration with @SNUnow, @ProjectHeatSafe profiled delivery drivers in South Korea, who during their shifts, experienced physiological strain similar to that of ultramarathoners! Here's a preview of what delivery drivers in South Korea do: youtube.com/watch?v=FiLIEPl_…

ALT Profiled delivery drivers in South Korea experienced core temperatures >38°C and heart rates >130bpm during their shift – similar to the ultramarathoners profiled in a recent study (Byrne et al., 2022). Imagine these workers experiencing daily the equivalent physiological strain of an ultramarathon! Find out more about the Byrne et al. 2022 study here: https://doi.org/10.1123/ijspp.2022-0043
In @ProjectHeatSafe, we study physical and cognitive-motor changes in construction task-specific performance at different environmental conditions. Using features such as welding and plank walking tasks in VR, we hope the findings will have better ecological validity.

A recent @ProjectHeatSafe field study effort, in collaboration with Vietnam Military Medical University, in Vietnam found that shoemaking factory workers were working with thermal press machinery that went above 170°C!
Congratulations to @ProjectHeatSafe Clarence Leow, for winning the "Best Presentation Award" as a Podium Presenter at IOHA2021! Awesome job Clarence!! 🥳🎉
