Here’s something most people don’t know about quantum-safe encryption. The new locks are much bigger.
Every time you open a secure website, your phone quietly checks a digital signature. It’s how your phone knows the site is real and not a fake. This happens in a split second, and you never see it.
The signature most websites use today is tiny, just 64 bytes.
One of the new quantum-safe signatures is 2,420 bytes. That’s about 40 times bigger.
Think of it like swapping a small padlock for a heavy safe door. You can’t just screw a safe door onto the same old frame. You need a stronger frame first.
The internet has the same problem. Bigger locks mean more data on every connection. More data can mean slower pages, older devices that struggle, and systems that were never built for that size. So companies can’t swap the old lock for the new one overnight. They have to rebuild things around it. Some are even designing new kinds of website certificates just to handle the size.

The people who build the internet and the people who build crypto are both getting ready for quantum computers.
OpenSSH is a tool engineers use every day to log in to servers around the world. Since late 2025, it warns you when a connection isn’t quantum-safe. That warning is on by default.
Ethereum is doing the same on the crypto side. This year, the Ethereum Foundation started a team just for quantum safety. More than 10 Ethereum teams now test quantum-safe upgrades every week, and they aim to finish around 2029.
Two very different worlds. Same decision: the old lock isn’t good enough anymore.

This matters more now. For years, 2030 was just a guess for when quantum computers could become a real problem. Now it's a deadline. In June 2026, the US government signed an order saying its agencies must switch their most important systems to this new kind of lock by the end of 2030. A rule is also being written to give companies that work with the government the same deadline.
If governments are setting deadlines, it's fair to ask your VPN the same questions.
