There’s truth to this. However, those in the OP comments don’t agree. They say this isn’t true friendship, this is for acquaintances, there’s no space for growth, etc. This all depends on how people define friendship. If people have different definitions for friendship, then this upsets the relationship. Some people want friendships as devices to help them grow. They will task the friend to stimulate their personal development. But is that really necessary—to ask someone else to trigger you, mirror you, help you, uplift you, support you, call you out, and be this, that, and the other for you. That is asking a lot of someone. If you see friendship as just sharing times together and you require nothing of the friend, then yes, you don’t need to offer unsolicited truths, reality checks, point out their contradictions, and tell them what you actually think. In many cases, this could permanently fracture the friendship, especially if the other person’s definition of friendship means you have to give them comfort, love, and support, and to always take their side. If you are loyal to the truth, then not everyone can withstand being your friend. If you are loyal to the person, then you will need to hold your tongue. It is highly rare to find a situation where you can be loyal to the truth and to the friend, where both aspects are inseparable—that loyalty to the truth = loyalty to the friend. But not everyone wants truth. I mean, are you even truthful with yourself? Probably not. Friendship does not have to be deep. Why do friendships need to be deep? It goes back to my first point—people only want friendships to be deep when they require something from the friend. They want the friend to be a device to listen to them, reflect back, support them, help them grow, uplift them, guide them, etc. Asking a friend to help you grow or to grow together with you is asking for a lot. Real healing is not a group project. It is done alone. Understand that no one has an obligation, or even necessarily a desire, to help you or to walk next to you. Because if no one does, what is the alternative—do you not heal and help yourself just because you don’t have a friend to do it together with? What are real friends? Real friends are people who require nothing from you but give to you. If each person in this world only gave and required nothing from the other, it would be full of peace and lack of pressure and expectation. Everyone would both give and receive. If a friend requires that you help them grow and to support them, is that a real friend anyway? Or are they just tasking you with work that they should be doing themselves? Most friendships would fall apart if a friend stopped doing anything for the other friend. Most friendships are built on “you do this for me, I do this for you.” So are almost all marriages. Most relationships are built on Customer Service.
