@cincybuffs @robmiech Ryan Vilade starting in World Series shows that every ex-Reds player finds success. Vilade played just 6 outs for Reds in LF on 6/27/2025 and misplayed a deep fly ⚾️ in Top of 9th to spoil Nick Martinez no-hitter. Then Reds cut him. (Dumbest move I’ve ever seen a manager make is Terry Francona bringing in an OF (Vilade) who had never played a game in the ballpark as a “defensive replacement” in the Top of 8th in a no-hitter.)

“There are some people who, if they don’t already know, you can’t tell ‘em.”—Yogi Berra
This paper answers why confident idiots run the world.
Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy.
It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.”
they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception.
And the results are wild.
participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile.
they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence.
the paper revealed a brutal paradox:
the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain.
if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing.
this creates a dangerous systemic loop.
the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions.
meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse.
top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else.
they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add.
we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence.
the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't.
the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.
The return of “The Campbler” (my lyrics about Lions HC Dan Campbell sung to the tune of Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler”)…
@EdWithSports @robmiech @GambLou @jackiehaz @kjhroyals @AaronNagler @cincybuffs
The Cambler needs to break out of his 0-for-7 slump on 4DN if the Lions are to knock off the Cowboys:
In a crowded airport bar
Awaitin' a plane bound for Motown
I met up with The Campbler
We were both too tired to scheme
So, we took turns a watchin' Cris Collinsworth on TV
Testosterone overtook him
And he began to speak
He said QC I've made a life
Out of bitin' others' kneecaps
And not carin' what the odds are
When the down marker hits "4"
So, if you don't mind me sayin'
I can see you're out of timeouts
For a taste of your Red Bull
I'll teach you how to score
So, I handed him my 6-pack
And he threw 2 or 3 back
Then he bummed my playbook
And asked me for a call
As the TV got deathly quiet
His face lost all expression
He said, "If you're goin' to win the game, coach, you got to learn to go for it all."
You got to know when to take a shot
Know when to throw hot
Know when to check down
And know when to run
You never call your kicker
When you're inside the red zone
There's never a time for kickin'
If the game's to be won
Even the media knows
That the secret to survivin'
Is keepin' the owner happy
By winnin' on the cheap
Every call must be a winner
And if any call's a loser
The best that you can hope for is to be fired in your sleep
And when he finished speakin'
He closed up my playbook
Crushed one more Red Bull
And still faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the playoffs
The Campbler he broke even
And in his final words I found a new way to run the sweep
You got to know when to take a shot
Know when to throw hot
Know when to check down
And know when to run
You never call your kicker
When you're inside the red zone
There's never a time for kickin'
If the game's to be won.

I’m always up for a good war story about a victorious battle in the war on drugs…
Eddie Murphy says a single encounter with Pauly Shore at the comedy club made him stop taking Percocet forever.
“I turned 30, I smoked weed, and I had one time in my twenties where I went to the dentist and the dentist gave me a Percocet.”
“I remember I was sitting at the dining room table and I said, 'I feel good.' And Fruity, who worked for me, was like, 'Yeah, that's them Percocet, man.' I was like, 'Really?' So I finished that prescription.”
“You know what made me stop taking them? And he don't even know this story. I was at the Comedy Store, and I had taken a Percocet and smoked a joint.”
“Pauly Shore came up to me, who owns the Comedy Store, comedian, and he was like, 'Hey, you don't even look like yourself tonight.' And I was like, 'Really? Who do I look like?' And he said, 'Some other dude.' Walked away, and I was like, 'Yeah, I ain't fucking with this no more.'”
