Last night was the first night I genuinely couldn't sleep because I was so excited to get back to reading an AI-generated proof (of the Grothendieck homotopy hypothesis).
Hard not to feel shellshocked, of course, but the feeling of "touching the infinite" is pretty palpable.
We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model.
We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results.

Interesting. I think this is true. Or contains a lot of truth.
Ten years ago, I offered students a free £50 in class and asked who wanted it. Many students put their hands up, but only a couple were bold enough to come forward and try to take it (even though I made clear it was freely available, and not stealing). This was a social experiment to encourage students to take every opportunity and be proactive, even if it involves discomfort and going against the grain.
The £50 went to a student, Laura, who kindly tried to give it back to me after class, but I insisted she'd earned it. I was delighted to see Laura again on Friday when giving a talk to the @LBS Alumni Council. It's no surprise that the same qualities she exhibited 10 years ago are also evident in her willingness to step forward and serve her alumni community on the Council.

Humans have always found new ways to condense and disseminate their deepest and hardest-won expertise. In the Middle Ages it was oral, via disputation. Then it was written, via printed text. Then it was digital, via software.
Next it will be agentic, via domain-specific models.
One of the things I've been thinking a lot about is that very soon @lanyon_ai will be able to formally verify and autonomously generate every breakthrough in discontinuous Galerkin methods for kinetic equations I developed over 6 years for my PhD.
In some respects, this is kind of terrifying. Culturally within the field of physics, computation has often been viewed by many as lesser, a simulacrum of the real physics that happens at the chalkboard or in the lab. And if AI can do it all, what is my contribution?
But I am quite excited for what we're building at @lanyon_ai because in many respects, I want the discoveries I've made to be more accessible. For years I thought this democratization was achieved through making open source codes that are freely available, distributed under permissive licenses, and usable on diverse architectures. While the never-ending journey of building an open-source general-purpose multi-physics code will continue, and I anticipate many of @lanyon_ai's formally verified solvers will be deployed through such codes, it is nevertheless fun to imagine just how easy it will be for someone to distill decades of my and my co-founders experiences in single prompts and deploy that knowledge on problems at the bleeding edge of engineering and scientific challenges.

New breakthrough quantum algorithm published in @Nature today: Our Willow chip has achieved the first-ever verifiable quantum advantage.
Willow ran the algorithm - which we’ve named Quantum Echoes - 13,000x faster than the best classical algorithm on one of the world's fastest supercomputers. This new algorithm can explain interactions between atoms in a molecule using nuclear magnetic resonance, paving a path towards potential future uses in drug discovery and materials science.
And the result is verifiable, meaning its outcome can be repeated by other quantum computers or confirmed by experiments.
This breakthrough is a significant step toward the first real-world application of quantum computing, and we're excited to see where it leads.

Quantum physics principles are fundamental to many real-life technologies, including lasers, MRI scanners, and the transistors that power all modern electronics. In the realm of artificial intelligence, quantum machine learning (QML) is an emerging field that harnesses quantum phenomena like superposition and entanglement. This allows for the processing of vast datasets and the solving of complex problems much faster than classical computers. QML has the potential to revolutionize areas such as drug discovery by simulating molecules, optimizing financial models, and enhancing pattern recognition.

The ability to reset a qubit at will is critical for scaling quantum computing. Our team has now shown this can be done with a dynamic range of more than four orders of magnitude. In the RESET OFF spot, the qubit maintains hundreds of microseconds of coherence, while in the RESET ON spot its lifetime drops below 100 ns. Just as important, we confirmed that neighboring qubits remain completely undisturbed during the reset. This is a key step toward fast, scalable quantum computing.
